I was reborn, but not everyone around me had the same fortune. While I could control my own actions, I couldn't control the actions of others.
And so, it was like a never-ending cycle between Neil and me. No matter what choices I made, our paths would always cross.
Instead of wasting her breath blaming me, Karina should aim her complaints at the cruel twists of fate.
"Let her be." Just as Karina was about to grab my hand once more, Russel strode over, his voice stern as he reprimanded her. He deflected Karina's hand away.
I remained silent, watching the scene unfold. Neil had just emerged from the hospital room, and currently, he and Russel were like oil and water. Every time they met, their expressions were equally icy.
"Why are you still here? Leave at once." Neil's voice was frosty as he addressed Karina. He must have seen her try to grab my hand, hence him stepping in front of me, creating a distance between us.
Karina struggled with Neil's coldness towards her. Even though he had never been particularly warm, she had never experienced such rejection from him before.
She took a deep breath, looking as if she was about to explode, but eventually, she swallowed her anger. "Fine, Neil. We'll proceed with Hiram's transplant surgery as you suggested. Have you found a compatible donor yet?"
"No," Neil answered bluntly, "But I'll continue to search for the right bone marrow."
Even though there was a mix-up during the compatibility test, revealing that Hiram wasn't his biological son, it was later clarified. However, being biological didn't necessarily mean a match.
"How long are you going to search? If you can't find a suitable donor, is Hiram supposed to wait for death?" Karina confronted Neil.
"I won't let anything happen to him, so you don't need to worry." Neil's responses were always succinct and to the point. He didn't waste words.
Karina was about to retort, but Russel stopped her. In the fleeting moment their eyes met, I felt a wave of annoyance.
I had assumed Russel had come with Karina today, but surprisingly, he was here to see me. "How long have you been here? Aren't you concerned about Serena and Brandon?"
Hearing the names of Serena and Brandon, Neil's gaze shifted between me and Russel.
"That's my business, and I don't need your concern, thank you." I assumed the coldest and most distant attitude towards Russel. From now on, I would strive to distance myself from him.
During my days at the hospital with Hiram, aside from bouts of boredom, my life was pretty peaceful. Neil had arranged for bodyguards at the door, so besides trusted doctors and nurses, no irrelevant personnel could enter. Naturally, I wasn't disturbed by anyone.
Serena and Brandon were being well taken care of by my parents. They would send me videos and updates about the kids daily, which reassured me.
"You need to understand the potential risks your actions could pose to Serena and Brandon, and I don’t want you making such a mistake." Russel's voice sank a few degrees, very serious.
Of course, I knew that, and I also knew that there was a hidden message in Russel's words.
