At the restaurant.
Don was already there when I arrived. He looked like he had arrived for some time.
"I apologize for being late." I pulled out the chair in front of him and set my bag down before taking a seat. "Have you ordered?"
"Yes, I have. They're all the signatures. Take a look and see if you want anything else."
"It's alright. That’s enough."
I keenly caught Don's strange expression. He did not look to be in high spirits like he usually was in the past. There was a sense of melancholy enveloping him.
After pulling out a few tissues, I wiped my hands and asked, "What's the matter? Did something serious happen?"
I heard Don sigh heavily. He looked a little sluggish as he replied in a low tone, "I've been suspended."
My eyes widened slightly. "Why?" I asked.
Don leaned back entirely and sighed again. "The university rented the plant laboratory to a company under my instruction. In the end, there were some issues with the company and they polluted our laboratory. The university thinks I was taking advantage of them by introducing the lab, so they suspended me for some time."
"That's fine. As long as you didn't do anything, it'll all be fine once the investigation is over," I comforted him softly.
He crossed his arms on the table and looked up at me. "Facing all these discussions leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I also want to switch jobs and change my environment, but I don’t know what to do. I feel like a failure. Can you understand this feeling?"
I nodded. "I can. When you feel useless, you wouldn't know what to do once you're out of your current environment. I used to be like this for a while, but I survived. I believe you can too."
