SIX, seven, eight…
Those were the number of shots I heard. I was not even aware that I was counting. But to my surprise, none of the bullets pierced my body. I was still… whole. And breathing. What was that all about? Should I be thankful that I was still alive?
My heart was still hammering inside my chest when I opened my eyes. I caught Trevor handing his gun to his beta while I remained frozen. I wanted to move or to say something at least but my knees were trembling.
When I inhaled the smell of blood and how it grew stronger from behind me, I forced myself to look. I gasped when I saw eight men, eight wolves to be exact, on the ground. I didn’t feel their presence. I didn’t even smell them or hear their wolves earlier.
I was either too rattled or too weak to notice them fall.
I could also smell blue rockets in the air. They were flowers which were lethal to the wolves. It must have been mixed with the bullets that’s why it only took one bullet on their foreheads to end them. So, the warriors were not really pointing their guns to me?
Relief surged through me that my knees buckled.
“Goddamn it,” Trevor muttered.
Before I could fall on the ground, the alpha was already in front of me. He caught me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I looked into his eyes and watched how his expression softened.
“You weren’t trying to kill me?” I managed to ask in a croaky voice.
Trevor brought me in his arms. “No, Priscilla. Never.”
That was a lie. I didn’t know what kind of game this man was playing at but he could still kill me anytime he wanted to. After all, he was a member of the family who ruined my soul. And yet, I couldn’t control my body’s own reaction towards him.
Before I knew it, I was already leaning on his broad shoulder. My hands were on his broad chest. My body was still a wreck. I was shaking. And he felt that. He tightened his arms around me. It was exactly what I needed.
Ever since I saw Trevor last night, I felt like my other foot was stepping on a landmine. And I couldn’t get away without risking my all.
“But the men, why did they die?” I asked when I was finally able to control my breathing.
Trevor released me and motioned the first two men who died a few steps away from us. “I had the case investigated. I found out that they were after your aunt. They were the reason why she was in an accident. And the warriors behind you tried to take you just now. Do you have an idea why there are wolves targeting you and your aunt?”
I gulped.
Was it about the stalker? Did he find out my connection with Addison? Or were there other wolves who discovered my secret and used her to lure me out? There could be a number of reasons.
Yet, I lied and said, “No.”
