Brittany Dustin apologized mechanically, and her mind was stuck on the accident scene where William Dillion had pushed her aside, taking the deadly blow for her.
"What good is your apology now? My son is in there fighting for his life, and he’s not even thirty. Why did you do this to him!"
Mrs. Dillion lost her shit, hitting Brittany over and over, only stopping when she'd had her fill, tears raining down her face. "Brittany, if anything happens to my son, it's on you!"
Brittany crumpled on the floor and was swallowed by guilt. She was at a loss for words.
Timothy Dillion was a bit more composed. He helped his wife up and then turned to Brittany, "You've had a rough night, go home."
He wanted her gone.
"Mr. Dillion, I want to stay. This happened to William because of me; I can't just leave…"
Tears welled up in Brittany's eyes, "Once I know William is out of danger, I'll leave. Is that okay?"
Timothy, knowing his son's feelings, could neither forgive Brittany nor be overly harsh to her. He helped her up and said, "You can wait."
Brittany sat stiffly on the bench, her eyes glazed, fixed on the operating room.
The sounds of Mrs. Dillion's sobs and the hustle and bustle of the medical staff formed a web around Brittany, suffocating her.
After what felt like an eternity, Mrs. Dillion cried herself out.
The lights in the operating room finally went off.
The Dillions stepped forward, "Doctor, how's our son?"
"Mr. Dillion, Mrs. Dillion, William was lucky to survive," the doctor said grimly, "But his legs took a serious hit. I'm afraid we can't save them."
Mrs. Dillion turned ghostly white, "You mean... amputation?"
Timothy swayed.
Brittany felt like she was plunged into an icy abyss. She was overwhelmed with guilt and remorse. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
William was the best person she knew.
In college, while guys his age were goofing around, he was already a well-known nerd.
He was always polite and humble.
Such a great guy was facing amputation because of her!
"You need to decide quickly, and if we don't operate soon, we might not be able to save his life."
