The sky was already starting to lighten when Isaac Salter woke up; he grabbed his phone but found no call log.
He rubbed his temples, opened the chat window, and shot off a message to Brittany.
[Flight's gonna be late, probably won't get there till 11.]
No reply.
He figured she was probably still catching some Z's.
Unable to fall back asleep, Isaac flipped open his laptop and got down to business.
...
When Brittany woke up again, she found herself in a hospital bed.
The strong smell of disinfectant hit her nose, and she remembered what had happened before fainting. She flipped the blanket and prepared to get out of bed.
"Hey, don't you dare get off that bed!"
Hannah Chester, who had been by her side all along, immediately stopped her, "Your baby isn't doing so well. Better stay put."
"How's William?"
Brittany grabbed her hand tightly, her eyes filled with anxiety.
Hannah looked a bit under the weather. She pushed Brittany back down onto the bed, "Don't worry, William's fine."
"So, his surgery's over, right?"
Knowing she couldn't hide it from her, Hannah took a deep breath, "William was sent to the ICU. After the surgery, he needs to be observed. If there's no infection for a week, he can be moved out."
Brittany's eyes turned red instantly, "It's all my fault."
If she hadn't gotten involved with Mr. Carrol's case, William wouldn't have come to bail her out, and he wouldn't have gotten hurt because of her, had a car accident, and possibly lose both legs!
Hannah didn't know what to say; she couldn't comprehend the pain Brittany was feeling.
She took a deep breath and said, "Bri, you can't blame yourself. It's that lunatic... The cops did some digging. That nutcase was hired by Jason Field, and he’s the one who hurt William."
Jason again!
Brittany despised every single one of the Field family, but right now, William was more important!
She took a deep breath, gripped Hannah's hand, her voice hoarse, "Take me to see William."
