"Mommy's gone on a business trip; how about we go find her tomorrow?"
Brandon tried to coax her softly, but to his surprise, Theresa bawled even louder, screaming, "No, no!" Then suddenly, she went quiet, her face turning blue. Grace freaked out and, with a slap, flipped her phone face down on the table, calling out Theresa in a panicked voice.
Brandon's face changed; the flipped phone completely blocked the view. The screen was pitch black, all they could hear was Grace calling out Theresa in sheer terror, along with the sound of her patting Theresa's back.
"Theresa!" Brandon also called out her name in a rush, simultaneously releasing the handbrake and speeding the car onto the road, wheeling around towards home.
It was hard to tell if Grace's quick thinking paid off, but as Brandon's car merged with the traffic, Theresa, who'd been silent for a while on the other end of the line, finally started crying again, but with violent retching sounds. It seemed like she was going to cry herself breathless once more. Grace kept hugging and soothing her with a gentle voice, hurriedly finding a chance to say to Brandon, "Mr. Crawley, Theresa just couldn't catch her breath from crying so hard; I couldn't calm her down at all. Can you come back now to check on her?"
Her voice was still trembling, and she was clearly still shaken up.
Theresa had really been crying until she couldn't breathe, which she heard of before; they call it a breath-holding spell in little kids. It was when they temporarily stopped breathing during an intense emotional upset or crying fit.
She'd been with Theresa since her birth and had never encountered something like this. She was a bit out of her depth and scared Theresa might trigger another breath-holding episode if she kept crying.
"I'm on my way back now." Brandon said, "Keep an eye on her for now; find something to distract her with."
"Okay," Grace replied before hanging up in a hurry.
Brandon tossed his phone aside, only then remembering Marian was still in the car.
