A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 800

Yvan remained silent, merely turning his face towards Declan, revealing that his usually unflappable, handsome face was now streaked with tears.

He wiped at his eyes, startled by the wetness he found there. It was only then he realized he had been crying.

Declan let out a sigh as they sat in the ambulance, speeding towards the hospital. He managed to make a call to Keaton, telling him to brace for their arrival. Keaton, catching the urgency in his voice, immediately said, “Yvan, something’s gone wrong on your end too? The ER is swamped today. You've got casualties too?”

Taking a deep breath, still tasting the acrid smoke in his lungs, Yvan coughed violently, spitting blood, which alarmed Declan. “Damn, I just remembered about your kidney transplant, and now you’ve gone and inhaled all that smoke rushing into a fire? You alright, man?”

Yvan waved it off with a hoarse voice, “I’ll be fine. Keaton, Logan was caught in that explosion too. I’ve just rescued him and his buddy. We're heading your way…”

“You might have to wait in line,” Keaton interjected. Despite being a close friend, Keaton was a doctor first, sworn to aid those in dire need. Given the chaos of the day’s events, even Logan would have to wait his turn for treatment.

In moments of life and death, equality reigned supreme, and not even Yvan, as close as a brother to Keaton, could bypass the queue for Logan.

Declan grew anxious. “Yvan’s not looking too good himself, Keaton, you think you could…”

“Just get here, and I’ll do my best to expedite things, but there are surgeries lined up, and we just can’t…”

The message was clear. Yvan had no privileges, and even if he did, this was not the moment to leverage them.

Yvan bit his lip, hoping for some leeway.
