"Hi, Amelia." His response came with a slight chuckle. Amelia's eyes still popped out in shock, and she dashed to where Fred stood.
"You took my daughter?!" She yelled, and Fred placed his index finger on her lips, shaking his head.
"Shhh… You are going to wake her up." He whispered.
Amelia's lips shuddered and tears flooded her eyes. She slowly bounced her head and smacked his hand off her mouth.
"Can I please see her?" She mumbled, and Fred nodded.
"Follow me." He led the way into the house, and Amelia followed behind him anxiously. They got into the bedroom and she found Alice lying on the bed, wrapped in a very white shawl.
Amelia moved closer to look at her face, and she saw that Alice was sleeping peacefully, and she didn't look so terrible like she thought she would.
"Now, you have seen her, let's step outside and talk. I know you have a lot of things to ask."
Fred turned to leave the room, and Amelia followed him with tears still streaming out of her eyes non-stop.
"Fred, why did you do this? Alice is just a baby. If you wanted to call my attention to something, why didn't you just take me instead? She is too young to be going through something like this."
"Can you at least calm down for a second? Stop crying if you want me to answer your questions." Fred slammed into the sofa and crossed his legs, showing how unbothered he was.
"Okay. I'm calm." She gulped.
"Here…" he tapped the sofa he sat on, the space very close to him. "Come and sit here. It's been a long time since we spoke, right? I'm still your very good friend." He uttered with a smirk.
"Very good friend? You abducted my daughter!" Amelia cried.
"Shhh!!! Tap.Tap. Sit."
Amelia sluggishly moved closer to him and sat close to him, where he tapped.
"Why are you doing this?" Amelia mumbled and clutched her eyes.
"Because I can and I want to. Amelia, I know you're aware that I have always wanted you to myself, and…"
"That is why you came up with the crazy idea of kidnapping my child?"
"Let me finish, okay?" His words proceeded out within gritted teeth. Amelia lowered her eyes and helplessly swallowed the awful words she wanted to say to him.
"Good. Now, listen to me. I kidnapped Alice because I needed to open your eyes to see what you haven't been seeing for years. James is not the right man for you. I am."
"Coming from a man that put my daughter's life at risk "
"You just saw her, didn't you? Is anything wrong with her? I bought her clothes, nutritious baby food, toys, and other things a baby would need. Her life is not at risk with me. I love her like she's my daughter, which she will eventually be."
"What do you want exactly, Fred?"
"It's not so hard to do, I want you to be with me. Marry me and let the three of us become one happy family."
"Are you insane?! Marry you?! What are you saying? What has gotten into you? I am married for fucks sake!"
"More reasons to marry you, Amelia. Since the first day I set my eyes on you, I have been so crazy about you, but you kept pushing me away after all the awful things that bastard did to you. You were never happy."
"I am happy now! He isn't the man he used to be!"
"Ah…" Fred sighed and stood up from the chair. "This is why I don't like naive women. They give you little attention and you fall harder into their trap. Do you think James has only you in his life?"
"Yes! I am the only one in his life! You can't gain anything from spoiling my husband in my presence, Fred. It's a waste of time."
"Really?! Look at this then." He lifted the PC on his table and opened it. He punched one or two buttons and gave it to her. "Take a look at it yourself."
Amelia curiously looked at the screen and saw a bold picture of James holding hands with a woman in a restaurant. He had a bright smile on his face, and so did the woman.
Amelia narrowed her eyes and gave the laptop back to Fred. "He was just holding hands with her. I did hold hands with you once. " She responded, lowering her head.
"Will you at least check the other pictures?"
"No! There's nothing you tell me that would make me hate my husband. Don't waste your time."
"Really? Okay then. So I guess we have a deal now."
