Xavier paused in the middle of his sentence and left it unfinished.
He believed that Veronica, being the clever woman she was, could understand what he meant.
Veronica hesitated for a moment. Realizing that there was no better option at the moment, she agreed to it. "Okay."
In a life-or-death situation, she didn't have time for sentimental concerns.
Survival was the top priority.
"But..." She hesitated for a while and voiced her concerns, "You collaborated with Zac. Now that you're saving me, aren't you afraid that Zac will retaliate against you?"
"Just worry about yourself."
Xavier didn't say anything more. He stood up and crawled out of the cramped one-person tent.
Indeed, he had joined hands with Zac.
The sole objective of the collaboration was Matthew!
After he left, Veronica placed her backpack inside the sleeping bag, covered it with a thin blanket, and pretended to sleep.
Then, she got up and emerged from the sleeping bag.
The hidden clan had an exceptionally pleasant environment with a clear moonlit sky and a sprinkling of stars. She could vaguely see Xavier still sitting by the extinguished bonfire.
But the bonfire had already finished burning.
In the darkness, the two of them exchanged glances for a moment, and Veronica entered Xavier's tent.
Xavier was still waiting for Nelson to take over the night shift. He couldn't wait for Nelson to be on duty before openly joining Xavier in his sleeping bag.
They had just entered the deep mountains today, and after nightfall, a heavy rain began.
After the damp weather, snakes, insects, rats, and ants would all come out.
In the deep mountains, these animals and plants posed a high level of danger. If bitten, one's life would be at risk.
After tonight, they could find alternative ways to spend the night when they set up camp again.
Veronica entered Xavier's tent. Not long after lying down, another voice sounded from outside.
"You go to sleep. I'll take the night shift,"
Nelson said to him.
"It's alright. I'm not sleepy." Xavier politely declined.
