"Something came up, and I've got to go home to attend to the emergency," Shirley said to Wade as they entered the studio.
Wade couldn't help frowning as he looked at Shirley's reddish eyes. He asked, "Is everything alright? Did something severe happen at home?"
"No, it's nothing serious. It's just that my dad was feeling unwell and passed out, so I would like to visit him." Shirley dared not tell Wade the truth. Not only was his studio just opened, but there were also finally a few custom orders coming in. She would not want to take too much of his time and put the business' reputation at risk.
"Would you like me to come with you?" Wade asked with concern.
Shirley shook her head and said, "It's okay. I'll just go back and check on him."
Wade had a solemn look on his face, and he looked down to ponder for a moment. It wasn't the best time to meet Shirley's parents just yet because he knew for a fact that he wasn't financially strong enough to be formally introduced to them. If he had met them later, when the studio expanded in scale and strength, he would have left a better impression.
"Have you booked your flight ticket?"
"Yes. It's in two hours."
"Alright, I'll take you to the airport now." They needed to be at the airport two hours before the flight, so they would have to leave now to make it in time.
Shirley didn't refuse Wade's offer. She quickly packed and left for the airport with Wade by cab.
They arrived in Bloomstead three hours later. It took them another two hours to get back to Bymond County by car, and it was already past one in the morning by the time they had arrived there.
Shirley found the house where her mother stayed in Bymond County. She couldn't help feeling uneasy when she arrived in the run-down neighborhood.
"Oh, you're finally back." Mrs. Wilson, Shirley's mother, hurried toward her as she entered the neighborhood, holding her hand and crying. "Oh, if you haven't arrived, I don't know what else to do…"
