Chadwick told Neil to just send him off in front of his house.
He hopped down from the car and dragged his feet on the way to the gate.
The sky is already dark. He came home after working so hard, hoping that being busy will help him forget his worries. But at the end of the day, there is always Adira inside his mind.
“Haaa,” Chadwick sighed while walking.
The reason why Chadwick asked Neil to just send him off outside his house is because he does not want Adira to know that he’s home. If Neil parked the car outside instead of the garage, then Chadwick can stall time before going in.
In the middle of the road, Chadwick saw a rock which was lost in the smooth asphalt. He kicked it while walking.
Roll.
Again, he kicked it until it went near the trash can on the side. As he lifted his eyes, he saw a taxi that stopped in front of their gate.
Chadwick stopped walking and watched the taxi. Then, he saw his wife’s silhouette. As soon as he saw Adira coming out from the taxi, he quickly hides behind the post where there’s a trash can.
Then the unpleasant smell came into his nose. Chadwick pressed his nose as he looked at the garbage can that has a bag of met or diapers left. Under the dim light, he looked at the liquids beneath his shoes. It is the liquids coming from the ruptured bags of the garbage.
“Sh*t,” he cursed silently, about to puke.
The place he’s hiding at is the corner where people put their garbage so that the garbage truck will collect it tomorrow morning.
He wanted to hide from Adira, but he worried that he might die from the sour, salty and stinky smell of the garbage.
‘No! You must endure it,’ Chadwick told to himself. He shook his head and pressed his nose. ‘If Adira caught me hiding, that will be more embarrassing.’
When he saw her before, he panicked and unconsciously hid himself. Now that the odor snapped his senses out, he realized that he has no reason to hide. Anyway, he already did so he needs to take responsibility.
‘So even if I die, I won’t come out here,’ Chadwick promised and held his breath. Then he peeked outside and saw Adira talking to the driver.
“You don’t accept card?” she asked.
“I am sorry, Miss. But my card machine is not working right now. Can you pay using cash?” the driver asked.
“Sure.” Adira gets her wallet from her bag.
‘Come on. Make it fast!’ Chadwick, who’s turning purple, wished. He took a deep breathe, “Ahhhhhhh~” Then held his breath again.
“Oh, here.” Adira gave the bill to the driver but the clumsy driver dropped the money.
“Oh! Sorry miss!”
‘Sh*t!’ Chadwick shouted when he saw the money fell down.
Adira looked at the driver and sighed. She did not pick up the bill that went beneath the taxi car and just got another bill from her wallet.
“No problem. Here.” She gave another one to the driver.
“Thank you, Miss. But this bill is too big. Don’t you have a lower bill?”
“Unfortunately, none. Just take it. Keep the change,” Adira said.
Chadwick smiled widely when Adira said that the driver should keep the change. He nodded his head enthusiastically.
“Oh, no! This is so big. I can’t accept this, miss.”
When the driver declined, the smile on his lips vanished.
“Accept it, mister. It’s my gift for driving me home safely,” Adira convinced.
Chadwick nodded his head and looked at the taxi.
“I can’t. I wanted to work diligently, but I don’t really think I can accept this. Please give me a lower bill.”
Upon hearing the driver’s answer, Chadwick cried without tears. His stomach is churning up and down and soon, he might throw up.
“Geez,” Adira sighed.
People loves money nowadays. So, she couldn’t believe there is still upright person just like this driver. Then again, she remembered her mom who always kind to people and only accepts things that came from her hard works.
“Alright,” Adira answered. She got the bill from the driver and looked for small bills inside her bag. The light from the post is dim. So, she had hard time looking for the small bills. “Wait a minute.”
“It’s okay. Take your time, miss.”
‘Take time?!’ Chadwick shouted inside his head. ‘If she takes more time, I will really die! LIKE REALLY DIE!’
“I don’t have smaller bills. But I have coins. Is it okay to pay you with coins?” Adira asked.
‘C-Coins?’ Chadwick uttered in disbelief.
“Sure. I accept coins, Miss.”
Adira smirked.
“Alright, I will count now. He grabbed coin after coin. “One, two, three…”
Actually, when Adira hopped down from the taxi, she already saw Chadwick who was running to hide near the garbage can. It wasn’t her plan to make life harder for him, but it came to this, so she plays along.
“...twenty one, twenty two,” she continued.
Chadwick could not take it. He felt as if his lungs are getting pierced if this torture continues. Unable to bear, Chadwick came out from his hide out and shouted.
“I HAVE A LOWER BILLS!” he screamed while walking closer. “Here! Here!” He grabbed his wallet and gave the lower bill to the driver. He even snatched the coins from his hand. “Are you happy?!” Chadwick asked the innocent driver.
The driver looked at Chadwick and at Adira. He doesn’t know what kind of relationship they have but fortunately, he got the payment he wants.
“Thank you, Sir,” the driver said. Then, he smelled the stink coming out from Chadwick. The driver covered his nose before he drove away.
When the driver is gone, Chadwick let out a long sigh. “Haaaaaa~ I’m alive.”
Few seconds later…
Chadwick now realized what the hell he just did.
He let Adira knows that he’s hiding from her! Now he wanted to die out of embarrassment.
“What are you doing?” suppressing the laugh, Adira asked.
Slowly, Chadwick avoided her gaze. He forged a cough and looked upon the sky. “Wow. There are lots of stars today.”
Adira looked up, but she saw none. “There are no stars.”
“The moon is pretty,” he quickly changed his statement and looked at the round moon on the vast horizon.
“Since there is a moon, I will pretend I did not know you’re hiding from me,” Adira said while nodding her head. She walked towards the gate.
As she walks by, Chadwick smelled the alcohol. He reached her and caught her wrist around his palm.
“Where are you from?”
Adira looked back.
“Did you drink?”
“Why are you so surprise? It’s not like this is the first time I drink,” Adira replied.
“But you told me that you will never come back to that bar,” he said, gritting his teeth.
“What made you think that I went to that bar?” she asked, smirking.
“So, my guess is right. You came there to meet him again.”
Adira pulled her wrist off from his grip. “Then? Is there a reason why I cannot do what I want?”
“Adira. You’re married. That guy, it is clear that he has something to you! I warned you already that he’s a bastard.”
“I don’t think you have the rights to tell me that,” Adira laughed.
“W-What?” he stuttered.
“I’ve been quiet for too long because I have no interest to be bothered. But if you will butt into my business, then I can’t help it but to make you realize that you don’t have the rights to stop me from seeing another man.”
Chadwick was loss for words.
Adira is right. Someone like him… Someone like him who let Isa came back and forth to their house, and even kissed him, what is his rights to stop Adira?
‘Because I like you. I can’t stand it if you are with other men,’ Chadwick said this silently as he clenched his fists.
“Unfortunately, I have no plans of dating another guy,” Adira added. “I came there to finish my business with him. So, this is the last day I met Geoffrey.”
Chadwick bowed his head and gulped hardly. Even if Adira said that she won’t meet Geoffrey anymore, he still feels uneasy. Because this is the first time Geoffrey showed that sincere interest to a woman. He never seen Geoffrey having that kind of eyes, the eyes of jealousy towards Chadwick.
He’s always jealous of Geoffrey. Therefore, Chadwick knows that anyone else what a jealousy expression is. It is a face that will do anything just to get what he wants. He saw it from Geoffrey.
For a moment, he regretted suggesting the divorce. All he wanted is to start from zero, and to like Adira from the bottom of his heart. But then, a strong competitor came. He said that it does not matter if Adira does not like him back; as long as there’s no other person who is ready to love her unconditionally.
But Geoffrey came. An old friend appeared to steal his wife.
“Actually, I don’t see any reason why you have to be this mad,” Adira said. “Is it because of your pride?”
“No,” he whispered. “Because this is important to me.”
“Why?”
“Because I…” Chadwick stared at her. “I…to you, I…”
“I?”
“I…. a dog.”
Adira tilted her head.
A dog?
Did Chadwick say that he is a dog?
“You are what? A dog?”
Chadwick gulped. Then using his eyes, he pointed the direction behind Adira.
Slowly, Adira turned around. Then she saw a black American Pit Bull Terrier. The dog is wearing a red collar and chains, which means he accidentally got out from its owner’s gate.
The two stood there without moving.
The muscular and strong dog with very strong jaw stared at the two and tilted its head.
“Are you afraid of the dog?” Adira murmured without moving.
“Hey. That dog is not just a dog,” Chadwick whispered. “That is a beast that can kill us.”
American Pit Bull Terrier is known as one of the most dangerous dogs on earth. This breed has bite statistics that rank it as the second-highest just after the Rottweiler and has been used in pit fighting for many years and capable of cracking bones.
Known as dangerous and aggressive breeds, no wonder why Chadwick and Adira felt fearful of the dog.
“So, what are we going to do now?” Adira asked.
“Listen to me. The door gate is around the corner,” Chadwick murmured. “At the count of three, we will run inside the gate of our house and close the door.”
“Won’t you try being friendly with the dog? He looks a bit kind,” Adira commented.
“Are you crazy? I won’t risk my life trying to be friendly with a dog that might eat me alive.”
“Okay. So, let’s do your plan,” Adira agreed.
“At the count of three,” he said, gulping. “One, two…”
Adira ran towards the gate and opened the door.
Feeling betrayed, Chadwick shouted, “Hey!”
When the dog heard the loud shout, it began to bark. “Arf!”
“Ahhh!” Chadwick shouted as he ran towards the gate.
The dog chased him while barking.
“Come inside!” Adira shouted to Chadwick.
With loud beating heart as death chases after him, Chadwick entered the gate. As soon as he entered, Adira closed the door and locked it.
The dog banged its end on the gate and whimpered.
Catching his breath, Chadwick glared at his wife. “I told you to run after I count three!”
“Stop complaining,” Adira said. “The best part is that we’re alive. Thanks to me.”
“Thanks to you?! I almost died, THANKS TO YOU!”
“Ahh, you are king of nagging.” Adira stepped away.
However, Chadwick held her hand and pulled her back. He leaned her against the gate and cut the distance between them.
Blinking swiftly, Adira looked at his face in close gap.
“We are still not finish talking.”
“But I don’t want to hear you anymore,” Adira said. She placed her hands on his chest and pushed him. “I don’t want anything from you. We will divorce anyway. So, let’s not butt into each other business.”
As she pushed him away, Adira left him alone in the gate.
Chadwick could not believe it.
When he asked her for divorce, Adira said that she wanted to get pregnant before that. But now, it seems that she had a change of mind.
She won’t force herself to him anymore. Because the seducing is over.
