"Uncle James, please give me some time to think things over."
Rachel pursed her lips and lowered her head. She didn't say anything more.
Knowing her, James decided not to say too much anymore. He only wanted to help, but he also didn't want to cause pressure on Rachel, especially now that she was pregnant. He patted her on the shoulder and said, "Well, I have a meeting later, so I'll go back to my office now. If you need anything, call me, okay?"
After she sent James away, the office became quiet again, and it made Rachel feel more depressed. What he said was right. Although she lost her parents, her life had never been miserable. The Fu family had given her the affection of a real family. She was guided and protected well. Her needs were all provided, and they sent her to a reputable school to get a good education. Aside from Jonathan, James also stood as a father to her as she grew up.
She was very grateful to them, especially to Jonathan.
But things happened too suddenly and unexpectedly. So no matter how rational she was, she couldn't help acting impulsive. Propping her chin in the palm of her hand, Rachel thought for a while. But the phone on her desk interrupted her train of thoughts.
A female voice came at the other end of the line. "Executive department? I just want to know if we already have a surgery scheduled this month."
"Give me a moment. Let me check." It was Rachel's first time doing administrative work. She hurriedly turned on the computer and looked for the surgery schedule list. After checking, she found out that last month and this month's record were not yet updated. She picked up the receiver again and explained to the caller, "I'm sorry, it's not on the schedule yet. Perhaps it will be posted this afternoon, so I'll send it to you right away."
"Alright. Please hurry up, so we can also make arrangements personally."
After hanging up, Rachel started her work with the help and guidance of her colleagues. She didn't notice the time, it was already noon.
"Rachel, would you like to go with me to the canteen for lunch?" One of her colleagues invited Rachel for lunch. Looking at her half-done work, she was about to shake her head to refuse. But when she remembered the baby in her belly, she smiled and said, "Okay. Just give me a minute. I'll just save this file."
They chatted while on their way to the canteen. Then her colleague asked curiously, "Rachel, I heard that you resigned because you wanted to become a full-time housewife. What happened then? Why did you suddenly come back to work now?"
Rachel was stunned, not because of the question, but because of the reason for her resignation. She didn't know who made it up for her, but she thought that it was a good thing.
She smiled and replied, "I realized it's boring, so I can't stay at home any longer. It's more fun to work."
"I think you're right. It's impossible for career women like us to only stay at home and do nothing. I always feel it's a waste of time." The colleague patted her chest exaggeratedly.
Rachel just smiled but didn't say anything more because they already reached the canteen. She was about to push the canteen door open when she heard a deep voice from behind. "Rachel?"
The voice sounded too familiar that her back froze.
Her colleague looked back and gently tapped her shoulder, thinking that she didn't hear it. "Rachel, someone is calling you. Is he your father?"
Rachel nodded and turned around. She saw Jonathan standing with his walking stick, not too far away from them. She smiled and asked gently, "Dad, why are you here?"
She secretly heaved a sigh of relief. All the while, she thought that it would be too difficult for her to face Jonathan. But seeing him standing in front of her right now, she managed to smile at him.
Jonathan nodded as his eyes sparkled. Holding the walking stick tightly, he walked a few steps forward and said, "I heard from James that you're back to work, so I dropped by to see you.
"Yes. Today is my first day."
Rachel then turned to her colleague and smiled apologetically. "I'm afraid I can't join you for lunch. I am so sorry."
Her colleague replied with a smile, "It's alright. It seems like you need to talk to your father, so I'll go in first."
Many employees were already having lunch inside the canteen, and some of them were Rachel's previous colleagues. She knew that their curious eyes were secretly looking at her. Since the entrance of the canteen wasn't a good place to talk, she invited Jonathan to the cafe on the third floor. As soon as they sat down, none of them spoke, but she noticed that he was staring at her slightly protruding belly. She smiled and said, "I'm pregnant. It's almost four months."
"Great! That's so great!"
Jonathan couldn't contain his happiness. His eyes turned red in an instant. Perhaps he was too embarrassed to cry in front of Rachel, he turned around and looked up. After calming down a little, he looked at her again and asked, "Does Jack know?"
"He does," she replied in a low voice
"Then he..." Jonathan paused and thought for a while. He then waved his hand and said, "Never mind. Just forget it."
All of a sudden, he sobbed and added, "Rachel, I am so sorry. I..."
Holding the teacup in her hands, Rachel interrupted him at once. She said in a low voice, "It's all over now. Dad, I'm not angry anymore."
