My Darling, My Dearest novel Chapter 413

From that day on, Jack and Rachel didn't say a word to each other even though they were living under the same roof.

Every morning, Jack was already out the door when Rachel went downstairs. In the evening, he was never home by the time she retired for the night.

How could she know anything about the banquet last night?

However, in the eyes of outsiders, she and Jack were still a couple.

Rachel knew that they also talked about Jack being a playboy, usually in relation with herself.

She looked down at her belly. 'It's only for the next five months, ' she told herself. Afterwards, she would have nothing to do with him anymore. She didn't have to bear the fingers pointed her way during that time.

It would be better to come up with a plausible explanation to block the nasty gossip.

After a long moment of silence, Rachel folded up the newspaper and returned it to Celia. "These reporters like to throw around groundless accusations, or else no one will actually read these newspapers. When you go back, if someone asks you again, you can explain this to them. Thank you."

Celia was the most suitable person for this. She nodded and said solemnly, "Okay, Rachel, don't worry."

After seeing Celia off, Rachel picked up her teacup and took a sip. Her phone on the table rang, and she heard Jonathan's deep voice from the other end. "Rachel, where were you last night?"

It was obvious that the man was dying to ask about the newspaper article, but in a roundabout way. Rachel smiled faintly and said directly, "Do you want to ask about the news regarding Jack?"

"Yes." Jonathan paused when the issue was directly addressed by Rachel herself. "Don't be angry—I'll deal with that brat myself. He knows full well that something like this would bring shame to the Fu family."

Rachel adjusted her sitting position. "I'm not angry. I asked that girl to attend the party with Jack last night."

Rachel repeated to Jonathan what she had said earlier to Celia and finally managed to comfort him. After hanging up the phone, she suddenly felt exhaustion drop in her heart.

Meanwhile, Austin pushed the door open from the outside, glanced at the pile of documents on the table, and asked, "Mr. Fu, have these documents been dealt with?"

Jack put down his phone and rubbed the furrow between his eyebrows. "Not yet. I'll deal with them tomorrow."

"I understand." Austin nodded, but inside, he was really confused. Jack usually took no more than half an hour to deal with documents of this sort.

However, things didn't work out that way today. The documents were placed on Jack's desk as soon as Austin came in that morning. The day was almost over, but Jack had yet to look at any of them.

This departure from habit irked Austin's curiosity. "Mr. Fu, are you okay? Do you feel unwell?"

"I'm fine, Austin." Jack leaned back, crossed his hands in front of him, and closed his eyes slightly.

Jack evidently did not intend to say anything more, so Austin nodded slightly and turned around to leave. Suddenly, Jack's voice came from behind him. "Austin, if you saw your girlfriend with another man, would you call her out on it? Ask her?"

After a moment of stunned silence, Austin carefully answered, "No, I wouldn't."

Jack suddenly opened his eyes and said shrewdly, "Tell me the truth!"

Hearing this, Austin blurted out the truth. "Yes, I would. If I saw her with another man, I would definitely call to ask what was going on; otherwise, I probably would go crazy wondering."

He noticed that Jack's face suddenly darkened at his words. A hand flew to his mouth in embarrassment, and he added hastily, "Mr. Fu, maybe Rachel was just busy. She probably hasn't seen the news, so she didn't..." Austin's voice faded off as he saw Jack's frown deepen.

"All right." Jack tried to straighten out that frown by pressing between his eyebrows. His face was a picture of gloom.

Last night, he specifically took Scarlett to attend the party and deliberately let the reporters take pictures of the two of them and publish them in the newspapers. He wanted to rile up Rachel to see if she was as cold and indifferent to his affairs as she seemed.

He spent all day doing nothing, just holding his cell phone and waiting for her call. The entire day had passed, but his phone didn't move.

With a subtle change of expression in his eyes, Austin wondered if he had said something he shouldn't have. He was still busy with his work, so he left the office quietly without waiting for Jack's answer.

Looking at the closed office door, Austin breathed a sigh of relief. Jack frowned, and a myriad of thoughts crowded his mind. He dialed Rachel's number multiple times, but he immediately dropped the call before it even rang. Finally, he locked the phone again and threw it aside. Suddenly, he received a message from her. "I have something to tell you. Come home early."

That short message brought a sudden warmth to his heart. He chuckled, a trace of smile in the corners of his eyes banishing the frown on his eyebrows.
