Kayla's calm voice had a way of putting people at ease. Ayla let out a slow breath and nodded. "Alright, Ms. Storm. You can tell me."
But she was not relaxed at all. She was only pretending. Kayla could probably see straight through it.
Kayla reached out and gently patted Ayla's shoulder. "The second thing that impressed me was you breaking up with Draven."
Ayla's chest tightened the moment she heard his name.
As expected, this talk was about Draven.
But what did Kayla want? Did she support the breakup? Ayla had never been able to read Kayla. From the very beginning, she could never guess what the older woman was truly thinking.
Their life experience was on completely different levels. Ayla felt almost powerless when she stood in front of Kayla. Even though she tried to stay calm, tension was still building inside her.
The pressure reminded her of when she was younger, standing nervously in front of Juliana.
Kayla had never approved of their relationship. Logically, their breakup should have pleased her. So why bring it up now? Was she about to criticize her? If Kayla started questioning her reasons, what could she possibly say?
Or maybe, in Kayla's eyes, only her son had the right to end the relationship; Ayla had no right to dump him. How could she stand up to someone so powerful?
Ayla had always been alone. Both Draven and Troy had strong families behind them. They had parents and relatives who would defend them in any situation. Ayla had no one like that. When she faced elders whose status and experience were far above hers, she could only rely on their kindness and fairness. Without that, she would never have been able to get through those situations.
Even during her divorce, no parents had stepped forward to pressure Troy or defend Ayla. There was no family backing her up. Otherwise, with the things Troy had done, most parents would have stepped in to protect their daughter.
Take Bria, for example. When Bria hurt her wrist, Troy rushed over immediately, saying he needed to handle the matter personally because it involved his sister's safety.
And now Ayla was facing someone even more intimidating—Kayla. At that moment, she truly wished her mother was still there and backed her up.
