The dinner was at Stonecrest Manor, a location that wasn't too remote and was relatively easy to find.
When Emma arrived, Evan wasn't there yet. To maintain the illusion that they had arrived together, as he'd instructed, she didn't get out of her car right away. Instead, she sat and waited for him.
The wait felt a little long.
Her parking spot was in a rather secluded area. It was pitch black outside, and while a few other luxury cars were parked nearby, there wasn't a soul in sight.
Emma had never been able to fit in at these high-society events, not then and not now.
She could never understand why a group of wealthy people would insist on dressing up in formal attire just to drink at a dinner party without eating any actual food.
My god, it was a dinner party! At dinnertime! Did none of them want to eat a real meal?
At a time like this, when she was starving, what Emma really craved was a piping hot, extra spicy bowl of takeout noodles to warm her up. But alas... tonight was destined to be a night without a decent dinner.
Frustrated, Emma pulled a sandwich out from under the passenger seat. She had bought it on the way over; it was filled with a beef patty and lettuce.
She nibbled on her sandwich, gazing out at the quiet surroundings.
It was always in these quiet moments that you ended up seeing things you shouldn't...
Like right now. A man and a woman came into view, their arms wrapped around each other. As soon as they reached the cover of a parked car, they started aggressively making out, oblivious to the world.
Oh my god!
Emma chewed the last bite of her sandwich, suddenly feeling trapped and wanting to get away. She remembered the last time she'd witnessed such a scene, she had been pushed into a pool and nearly drowned. Why was this happening again?
Once they were completely out of sight, Emma, whose legs had gone numb, finally climbed out of her Lexus.
She had been sitting directly in front of them and had slid down from the driver's seat to hide below the dashboard to avoid being seen. Holding that position for so long had made both her legs fall asleep.
"What took you so long?" Evan asked as he saw Emma limping towards him. Without thinking, he stepped forward and reached out to support her.
"Did you eat something bad again?"
He knew she had a sensitive stomach. Before they divorced, she would often get an upset stomach whenever the seasons changed.
"I'm fine, you don't have to help me." Emma ignored his outstretched hand and walked straight towards the main entrance. "Let's go, let's just get inside."
