“Then you’re just too fragile.”
“Shut up!”
His nerve struck, Ethan flew into a rage and charged at her with the knife. “If I can’t be happy, then you can’t live either! I'll take you down with me today!”
Alistair rushed forward as well, trying to loop a rope around Grace.
“You damn girl! You ruined my family! I'm going to make you pay for Lilian today!”
In the nick of time.
The main door of the old estate was kicked open.
The tremendous sound sent dust raining down from the ceiling.
Before Ethan could react, a dark figure rushed in.
With a swift move, Damien executed a clean takedown, disarming Ethan and kicking him in the back of the knee.
Ethan cried out in pain and fell to his knees.
At that moment, several heavily armed SWAT officers crashed through the windows.
“Freeze! Police!”
The dark muzzles of their guns were instantly pointed at Alistair's forehead.
Alistair’s legs gave out, and he wet himself in terror.
“I was forced! It was all Ethan! He forced me!”
“Hah.”
Damien planted a foot on Ethan’s back, his eyes filled with a murderous rage.
“You lay a hand on my woman? Ethan, it seems you have a death wish.”
Ethan’s face was pressed against the dusty floor as he struggled to lift his head and look at Grace, who stood off to the side.
She was still so beautiful, so pristine, without even a single hair out of place.
Ethan and Alistair were handcuffed and shoved into a police car.
As they passed Grace, Alistair was still struggling.
“Grace! Grace, save your father! I’m your own father! You can’t be so heartless! You’ll be damned for this!”
Grace watched him, her expression unreadable.
“Mr. Hart.”
Grace leaned back into his embrace, the tension finally leaving her body.
A deep wave of exhaustion washed over her.
It wasn’t physical fatigue, but an emotional one.
Being entangled with these people for so many years, whether it was hatred or resentment, had been utterly draining.
“Damien.”
“Hm?”
“It feels like it never ends. I’m so tired,” she said softly, closing her eyes.
“It won’t anymore.”
Damien tightened his arms around her. “From now on, your world will only have flowers, applause, and me.”
“I want to go home.” Grace turned and buried her face in his chest. “I want some of Grandma’s soup.”
“Alright, let’s go home.”
Damien swept her up into his arms and strode toward the car parked by the road.
As the sun set, its golden rays cast long shadows behind them.
