"Hello?"
Grace's cool voice came through the phone, with Damien's low murmur of "Who is it?" in the background.
Dorian's throat tightened. He took a deep breath. "Grace, it's me, Dorian."
There were two seconds of silence on the other end.
"Mr. Hart, is there something you need?"
"Grace..."
Dorian glanced at the hopeful expression on Alistair's face and struggled to speak. "The doctor said he only has a few months left. He... he wants to see you one last time."
"For the sake of... the fact that he's your biological father, can't you..."
"No."
Her reply was swift and merciless, without a hint of hesitation.
Grace didn't even give him a chance to finish his sentence.
Dorian was stunned. "Grace, I know you hate him, and I know the Hart family wronged you. But he's dying! Death erases all debts. Can't you just come see him one last time? Even if it's just... even if it's just to see him get what he deserves!"
A soft laugh came from the other end of the line.
"Dorian, do you really think that just because someone is about to die, all the evil they've done can be wiped clean?"
"Do you remember what he said that year when I had a fever of 104 degrees?"
Grace's voice was calm, a calmness that was utterly terrifying.
"He said, 'You jinx, don't get Lilian sick. If you're going to die, do it somewhere far away.'"
"That night, I walked three miles in the pouring rain to a clinic. If that kind doctor hadn't waived the fee for my medicine, do you think I'd still be alive to hear you lecture me about a father-daughter bond?"
Dorian nearly dropped his phone.
Some of these things... he knew. Others, he didn't.
Or perhaps, in the past, he had chosen to turn a blind eye.
"Dorian," Grace said, using the name for the last time with a sense of finality, "the moment you stood by and did nothing as Lucian kicked me down the stairs, the moment you accused me of being selfish for a single one of Lilian's tears, there was nothing left between us."
"As for Alistair..."
