When they reached the hospital entrance, Renata pulled up in her car. Laurinda slid into the back seat and Egan hopped into the front, shooting Renata a curious look.
“So, what had you rushing around all morning?” he asked.
Renata was behind the wheel, sunglasses on, her mood almost glowing. Egan couldn’t see her eyes, but he could tell she was feeling pretty pleased with herself.
“You’ll find out soon enough.”
She wasn’t about to spoil the surprise. Sometimes, knowing too early just ruins the fun.
They parked in front of a tall building. Egan stayed in his seat for a second, staring at the logo on the building, completely thrown off.
“Why are we here?” he asked.
Renata grinned. “To give you a surprise, obviously. Stop dragging your feet and get out.”
She nudged Egan, then opened her own door and stepped out of the car.
While they were talking, Laurinda had already jumped out, bag slung over her shoulder, and was heading straight for the entrance like she owned the place. No one stopped her. She walked through as if she did this every day.
Egan walked next to Renata, still in disbelief. He tugged at her sleeve, lowering his voice. “Who is Laurinda, really? How is she just walking into X Organization’s branch like it’s nothing? Why isn’t anyone stopping her?”
Renata shot him a look. “Would security stop you from walking into your own house?”
She rolled her eyes and picked up her pace, catching up with Laurinda at the elevator.
Egan stood there, trying to wrap his head around what Renata just said. Did he hear that right? X Organization actually belonged to Laurinda?
No way. His own boss had been digging into X Organization for two years and never once figured out Laurinda was the one behind it.
