Sam took the prescription from Balaam and headed out to get it filled. Balaam stayed behind, sitting at Adolphus’s bedside, showing Laurinda some simple massage techniques to help with recovery.
He watched Laurinda’s careful hands and smiled, clearly pleased. “You know, when I first saw you at the clinic, this kid couldn’t take his eyes off you. I knew right away he was serious about you. Later, I asked him what made him fall for you. Want to guess what he said?”
Laurinda looked up at him, her eyes shining with curiosity. She really wanted to know Adolphus’s answer.
“He said it was just a feeling. From the first moment he saw you, he wanted to take you home. He thought it was strange, but he couldn’t help himself.”
Balaam grinned. “Honestly, I didn’t expect you’d really fall for him too. But you two... you’re perfect together.”
Laurinda glanced over at Adolphus and laughed quietly. “He’s smart, handsome, and so thoughtful. Who could say no to that? If I hadn’t believed he had a fiancée, I probably would’ve liked him even sooner.”
She couldn’t help but remember their first meeting. She’d been drawn to him right away, even if she tried to act indifferent. The only reason she turned him down at first was her own principles.
“A fiancée?”
Balaam looked puzzled, as if this was news to him. “Since when does Adolphus have a fiancée? How come I never heard about that?”
“It was Earl who told me,” Laurinda said softly, shaking her head with a little smile. She still didn’t get why Earl would say that, but it didn’t really matter now. Thankfully, Earl’s meddling hadn’t kept her and Adolphus apart.
When Balaam heard Earl’s name, his expression changed. “I know Earl. He studied medicine with me for a while. He was alright at it, but not great. When he realized he couldn’t keep up with Adolphus, he quit and went into psychology instead. Harrell says he’s doing okay.”
Balaam thought for a second, his brow furrowing. “You don’t think... maybe he told you that to keep you away from Adolphus?”
Laurinda laughed, shaking her head. “I doubt it. I barely knew Adolphus back then, and isn’t he Earl’s uncle? Why would Earl want to cause trouble for him?”
Balaam gave her a look, half amused, half serious. “You should take some time to learn about how complicated the Lane family really is. There’s a lot I can’t tell you, but just know it’s not as simple as you think.”
