“It’s more than just the bracelet. With it on her wrist, everyone knows the next head of the Lane family will be Adolphus. We’ll need to watch our step from now on.”
The group kept gossiping, completely oblivious to the people standing quietly in the side courtyard.
Patten and Odette stood together, their faces stiff with frustration.
Ever since the Charles family scandal, Adolphus’s grandparents had taken Patten’s company and even banned them from stepping foot in the Lane Estate. If it weren’t for Felix’s birthday, they’d never have made it past the gates today.
Patten could hardly hide his anger. It felt like Adolphus could get away with anything, and his grandparents always swooped in to clean up after him. But when it came to Patten and Odette, they abandoned them, even going so far as to take away their livelihood. It was like being pushed straight off a cliff.
“She’s just a fake heiress who got tossed out of a fallen family, and your mother still treats her like some kind of treasure,” Odette muttered, her voice dripping with bitterness as she watched Laurinda walk away.
Patten shot her a glare and hissed, “Shut it. You can look down on Adolphus’s girlfriend all you want, but leave Tanya out of this. If Tanya publicly humiliates you and throws you out of here, everyone will know she’s cut you off, and all those loose ends you left behind will come right back to bite you.”
Odette’s body tensed. She knew just how precarious her situation really was. She’d seen what happened to the Charles family. Without the Lane family backing her, she’d probably end up just as bad.
“But are we really supposed to just stand here and watch that brat gloat? Are we supposed to let the Lane family fall into Adolphus’s hands?”
“No way. I’m not letting Adolphus win. Before your dad confessed, he gave me a contact. As long as they agree to help us, Adolphus doesn't stand a chance. There’s still time. We can turn this around.”
Patten turned to Nelly, who was quietly standing nearby. “Nelly, we’re in this together. Just pretend you heard nothing today. And when you see Mom later, don’t get into it with that girl—just focus on keeping Mom and Dad calm. Trust me, if I’ve got something to eat, so will you.”
Nelly nodded. She’d already picked her side. Backing out now wasn’t an option. She thought of Adolphus—not just her brother, but the same guy who always found ways to overshadow Earl. There was no way she’d let him have his way. Honestly, she kind of hoped Adolphus married Laurinda. If he brought a girl without any social standing into the family, Earl would win by default.
Meanwhile, Laurinda followed Ursula into Tanya’s private courtyard.
