Laurinda glanced over and saw the wooden box by Felix’s side. From the way it looked, she immediately knew it was the same box Arrow had been clutching earlier. That must be Laurinda’s birthday gift for Felix.
“I don’t think we need to wait until another day. It’s still early,” Nelly said, her tone dripping with fake concern. “Dad, that wooden box next to you looks like an antique. Why not have Jarred check it out for you?”
Felix had seen all kinds of tricks during his years of influence, and it was obvious to him what Nelly was scheming. His eyes darkened as he looked at her.
Noticing this flicker in Felix’s expression, Nelly almost wanted to laugh. In her head, this meant Felix had realized Laurinda was trying to fool him with a fake painting and didn’t want to embarrass her in public.
But that was exactly what Nelly was hoping for. She wanted Laurinda to lose face in front of everyone and wasn’t about to let this chance slip by. Her enthusiasm grew even stronger.
“Dad, why keep the good stuff hidden?” she coaxed. “When you have something nice, you should share it. Especially when someone as skilled as Jarred is here. Let everyone have a look at your treasure.”
Nelly sounded so eager that, if not for her upbringing, she probably would’ve grabbed the box herself. This was the perfect setup and she didn’t want to miss out.
Laurinda watched Nelly’s antics, her gaze cold and detached. She thought Nelly looked ridiculous, bouncing around like a clown. With all the comforts and security in life, Nelly still insisted on pushing herself into a corner.
Felix saw how worked up Nelly was getting, as if she might just snatch the box. Disappointment flickered in his eyes. When, he wondered, had his daughter become like this?
Nelly watched Felix closely, catching the disappointment on his face. She didn’t think it was meant for her, though. In her mind, Felix must be disappointed in Laurinda. That delighted her even more. If her father was upset with Laurinda, he’d soon be upset with Adolphus too. She could only hope for a fight, maybe even pushing Adolphus out of the Lane family altogether.
Trying to hide her glee behind a barely contained smile, Nelly almost laughed out loud but managed to restrain herself. She coughed lightly and spoke again, pretending to be casual. “Dad, is there something wrong with the treasure in the box? Is it inconvenient to show everyone?”
With all eyes turning to her, the meaning behind Nelly’s words couldn’t have been clearer.
“That’s enough. Since when do you care about these things?” Tanya couldn’t watch Nelly push any further, worried she’d say something even more embarrassing. She took the chance to step in.
“We have an expert here already. Let’s go to the study so everyone can take a look.”
