Leon was speechless. He glanced at his friends, hoping someone would jump in and help him out.
That’s when he noticed both of them were giving him odd looks. Clearly, they’d caught on to what he’d done: he’d used them as his cover.
“I heard you call Ladd… Ladd,” Leon finally managed to say, his voice stiff since nobody else was going to step in for him.
Laurinda met his gaze, completely unbothered. “Yeah, that’s right. Ladd’s actually my uncle.”
“So doesn’t that mean you got in through connections?” Leon pressed, feeling exposed.
Laurinda’s voice was calm but firm. “You think that counts as favoritism? I don’t have time for baseless accusations. I’ll give you one day. If you can prove I got special treatment, fine. If not, don’t expect a spot in Ladd’s lab... or any other lab, for that matter. I trust Ladd will have a nice, long talk with your supervisor about your character.”
Ladd nodded in agreement, clearly backing her up. He cared a lot about integrity and honesty. His work kept him busy, so the last thing he wanted was drama in the lab. He just wanted straightforward people on his team.
Laurinda turned back to the group. “We’ve cleared up the connections issue. Now, why don’t you give me a problem to solve? I’ll show you my skills. You’ll see I don’t need to rely on calculations the way you think.”
With Laurinda standing there, bright and confident, the other two started to realize they might have judged her too quickly. Of course, neither one wanted to admit it out loud.
The girl rummaged through her backpack, pulled out a thick reference book, and found a problem that looked pretty complicated. She passed it to Laurinda.
“This one—give it a shot,” she said.
Laurinda took the book, handed the exam sheet on the table to Ladd, then sat down and picked up a pen. She went to work on scratch paper, her steps smooth and quick, as if the answers just flowed out of her mind without effort.
