From Ashes of Scandals to His Embrace novel Chapter 495

Laurinda had no idea what was going on with Jarred. She spent all day mastering the lab routines, only to realize, almost in a blink, that the whole day had slipped away. If Adolphus hadn’t called to say he was waiting outside, she probably wouldn’t have noticed that it was already dark.

After the call, she gathered her things, slung her backpack over her shoulder, and left the lab. Locking the door, she turned and spotted Lucas standing just a little ways off.

Lucas came over, holding a little box of chewy rice cakes. He held it out to her.

“I remember you used to love these as a kid, all soft and sticky. I got them for you... as an apology. Can we stop fighting now?” he said, looking a little sheepish.

Lucas had tried to apologize yesterday, but when he’d seen Laurinda buried in Adolphus’s arms, looking so heartbroken, he lost his nerve. He didn’t know what Kenny had done, exactly, but it was obvious Laurinda couldn’t stand him. At this point, they couldn’t even be friends, let alone anything more.

Laurinda breathed in the warm, nutty smell from the box and took in the way Lucas looked—guilty and hopeful. She was still mad at him, but honestly, Lucas had never really hurt her. It was hard to stay angry.

She took the box, glanced up at the evening sky, and asked, “Were you waiting here for me long?”

“Not too long,” Lucas said quickly. “I came over after class.”

When he saw her take the rice cakes, his eyes practically lit up. He watched her, hopeful. “Try one. Are they good? The shop had a huge line. All the girls in my class love them.”

Laurinda eyed him, instantly guessing he probably asked around on how to cheer up a girl. She wanted to roll her eyes.

“They’re good,” she said, taking a bite. “Have you eaten? Want to grab dinner together?”
