“I’m just guessing. If you haven’t met her, how could I have? If you’re that curious, why don’t you just ask him next time? Maybe you could even help him win her over. You don’t want to see him lonely forever, do you?”
Her words struck a chord. An image of Horace, bleeding and dying in front of me, flashed through my mind.
In my past life, Horace had been single his whole life—lonely, tragic, and dead because of me. This time, I owed him so much. It would be a good thing if he had someone special in his life.
I nodded firmly. “You’re right. I’ll ask him about it.”
Rachel looked at me, her eyes clouded with an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher. She didn’t say anything more, just finished her food quickly and went back to her work.
I went about my own business, but ended up tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep. My mind was consumed with how to get evidence of Steven’s affair.
I knew he would cheat soon, but how could I get the proof? I couldn’t exactly stand there and watch it happen; he wouldn't do it then. And I couldn’t follow him because I had no idea what his schedule was.
I spent the whole night agonizing over it and was completely exhausted the next day. When Jacob saw me, he was stunned. “Zephyra, you look awful. Did you pull an all-nighter?”
I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. I collapsed onto my desk. “Yeah, didn’t sleep a wink. Just give me ten minutes.”
My office was private, so no one would see me slacking off. But less than a minute later, the main office area erupted in chatter. I vaguely heard someone mention “Mr. Lancaster,” but I was too tired to focus.
The exhaustion was unbearable. I forced myself to sit up and tried to work on my designs.
Suddenly, a cup of coffee appeared on my desk. I turned to see Jacob’s gentle, smiling face.
“Here, Zephyra. This should help you wake up.”
