Steven’s handsome face was dark with fury. He reined in his temper and reached for me. “Zephyra, stop making a scene. Come with me.”

A scene? Who was making a scene?

I just couldn’t swallow my pride.

“I told you, you have two choices. Either you choose me, stay here while I get my tests done, and then I’ll go back to the hotel. After that, you can comfort your precious Verna however you want, I won’t interfere. Or, you can get lost and go to her now, and leave me alone.”

Before Steven could respond, my shattered phone suddenly rang.

The screen was too cracked to see the caller ID. I answered, and the volume, apparently broken, blared loudly.

“Zephyra, I’m at your hotel. Where are you?”

It was Horace. He’d actually come to find me. He must have sorted out his business!

A wave of joy washed over me. I gave him my location, even the floor number. If I remembered correctly, this hospital was close to my hotel; I’d seen it on the way here.

“Horace, come get me! I’ll wait for you here.”

Horace’s voice was urgent. “Are you hurt? Get a doctor to look at you. I’m on my way.”

“Okay.” I hung up and looked at the towering man in front of me, a mocking smile on my lips. “Well, someone’s here to pick me up. You can go now.”

Steven grabbed my arm, his handsome face darkening. “Horace is here? He’s getting treatment for his leg? You two planned to meet?”

I tried to shake him off, but his grip was like iron. “What’s it to you? Isn’t your Verna having a breakdown? Why are you wasting time with me instead of going to her?”
