He tugged at his collar, undoing two buttons as if to help himself breathe.

I was stunned, my mind blank. I shot to my feet. “Steven! What do you think you’re doing, tearing up the divorce papers? Don’t tell me you’ve changed your mind!”

He finally looked at me, his dark eyes simmering with a suppressed rage, his voice a low, cold rumble.

“I have.”

A rush of blood flooded my head. I lunged forward, grabbing the collar of his shirt, my teeth clenched.

“Why? You promised! You said we would get a divorce as soon as we got back!”

Steven let me hold him, his dark eyes narrowing.

“The deal was, we get divorced after the deal is done. The deal fell through. How can we get a divorce?”

“What the hell does that have to do with me?!” I shrieked, my grip tightening. “You were the one who threw away a billion-dollar deal for Verna! My part of the job was done! You had a signed contract! Why doesn’t that count?”

“Steven, don’t be such a scumbag! Be a man! I have a digital copy. Print it out and sign it right now!”

I fumbled for my phone, my face a mask of restrained fury, when a sharp pain shot through my arm. His voice was a low growl, each word bitten off.

“I said, no divorce.”

For a second, I froze. Then, pure rage erupted. I swung my hand and slapped him hard across the face.

Steven’s head snapped to the side. He ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek, his dark eyes glinting with a dangerous light as he looked at me.

“So angry that I’m getting in the way of your happily ever after with Horace? Fine. I won’t let you have it. Hit me again. I dare you.”

Before the words were even fully out of his mouth, another sharp, clear slap echoed through the room.

I was losing my mind. “Steven, you are a complete bastard! A manipulative lowlife! You don’t even have the right to say Horace’s name! You’re not worthy of shining his shoes!”

“Whoever fell in love with you must have been blind! A two-faced, backstabbing piece of trash like you should be wiped from the face of the earth!”
