I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 187

So this was Antonia’s game. She gets beaten up by God knows who and decides to pin it all on me.

Fine. She could play the victim, but I could play crazy. My threat worked; several people took a step back, careful not to even brush against my clothes, though they continued to curse me for being shameless.

Antonia was speechless. “You’d actually try to frame someone? You’re Mrs. Lancaster, for God’s sake. Have you no class?”

“My class is situational. It rises to meet the occasion,” I said, my face a mask of cool contempt. “You’d better tell me where the rest of my mother’s heirlooms are right now. If you do, I might be able to tolerate your existence for a little while longer.”

Antonia bit her lip. Seeing that the crowd had backed off, she dropped her facade. “Zephyra,” she hissed, “so what if your mother made them? My mother is her sister, which gives her a claim. Now she’s given them to me, so they’re mine. I can sell them or give them away as I please. What are you going to do about it?”

My voice was flat, but each word was laced with ice.

“My dowry has jack-shit to do with your mother. She’s not my daughter. I’m asking you one last time: who did you give the other pieces to?”

“I’m not telling you. What can you do? Hit me in front of all these people?” Antonia smirked, crossing her arms in open defiance. “Speaking of these little trinkets, it reminds me of the day my aunt died. Haha, you still don’t know how your mother really died, do you?”

My head snapped toward her, my heart sinking. Antonia’s smile widened. “You’re such an idiot. You still think she died of her illness.”

“But you’re right, in a way. She did die from her illness. It’s just that she could have lived for another three months. But what a shame… she saw my mother and your father wrapped in an embrace. The shock sent her tumbling down the stairs. And that, my dear cousin, is how she really died. Haha.”

I stared at Antonia’s triumphant face, my pupils constricting as her words echoed in my mind.

*She could have lived for another three months… she saw my mother and your father… tumbling down the stairs…*

My mother could have had more time. I could have had her for six more months.
