I clutched the small carvings, my fingers tracing their familiar lines. The tension in my face finally eased into a smile, and I nodded at him meekly.

“You!” Wendy’s face contorted with fury. “You two know each other?”

Antonia bit her lip. “Wendy, I was just about to tell you.”

Wendy shot Antonia a venomous look, her eyes full of blame.

Antonia flinched, then turned her attention back to me. “Zephyra, you wanted to know where the dragon is, right? My mother has it. But she’s hidden it somewhere you’ll never find. However, if you introduce Wendy to Horace, I might be persuaded to bring it to you.”

Wendy coughed, then straightened up, casting a loving gaze at Horace.

“Your name is Horace? That’s a beautiful name.”

I scoffed. Even if Horace were looking for a girlfriend, it wouldn’t be someone like Wendy.

“Why would I introduce him to someone who’s just as despicable as you are? You’d better tell your mother to return what’s mine. If any of my mother’s things are damaged, I will personally guarantee that her golden years will be anything but.”

A flicker of light, a hint of satisfaction I hadn’t noticed before, shone in Horace’s dark eyes.

Wendy stomped her foot in frustration. “What’s wrong with me, Zephyra? You watch your mouth!”

“She’s right!” Antonia chimed in. “You’re the shameless one, Zephyra. You have to have everything. You already have Steven, but you want to keep Horace on a leash too. Have you no shame?”

She then turned to Horace, her voice syrupy sweet. “Horace, I know you’re not from as prominent a family as Steven, but you’re very handsome. You have a bright future ahead of you. Zephyra is a married woman. Doesn’t it hurt to be her backup plan?”

“I don’t think you’re that kind of person. Zephyra must have something on you. Or maybe… maybe your father cut you off because of your leg? Is Zephyra paying your bills? Is that why you have to do whatever she says? You should come with us instead. I have much more money than Zephyra. Mr. Jones gives me three hundred thousand a month. I can definitely take care of you.”
