My eyes widened. I was about to burst in and call him a liar—I was with Horace last night, when had I ever said I wanted to be with him?—when Steven continued.
“She told me last night that your heart condition is serious and that you need to be transferred to another hospital with a better specialist. I’ve made all the arrangements. I just came to let you know.”
My hand froze on the doorknob.
Why had he handled the hospital transfer already? I thought we had agreed on next Tuesday.
But then again, Uncle Julian’s condition couldn’t wait.
I peeked in and saw my uncle propped up in bed. He looked pale and unwell, his usually rugged face covered in stubble, his expression grim. His dark eyes were as sharp as daggers.
“You’re all talk and no action. That mother of yours has a mouth fouler than a sewer, always targeting Zephyra. And your brother, right? Looks like a decent human being but has no class, spewing insults at Zephyra every chance he gets. Do you have any idea how much that girl has had to put up with? Have you ever even asked?”
“She keeps everything bottled up, only ever sharing the good news. It’s one thing for me not to know—I was far away. But not you. You’re her husband, her rock. You married her, so you should be responsible for her. But look at you. You can’t even do the bare minimum. You just stand by and watch her get bullied. A mama’s boy, is that what they call it? Now get out of my sight. Get out!”
I hesitated, a warmth spreading through my chest.
*It’s so good to have Uncle Julian.*
Only true family would care for me, worry about me like this. Even though I no longer cared about Steven and had grown used to treating him as if he were invisible.
Steven’s expression didn’t change, but the line of his jaw tightened. “You’re right to scold me.”
His tone was sincere, but Uncle Julian was still furious. “Why don’t you ever stand up for Zephyra? Why did you marry her if you weren’t going to take care of her? To be your maid? Your unpaid servant?”
