I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 193

I shook my head. “I don’t know. He said he wants to tell me when he’s standing on the biggest stage. I’ve already agreed.”

Uncle Julian beamed. “That’s my boy! Full of ambition. Mark my words, he’ll win. People with a dream fight the hardest.”

I thought so too, and nodded enthusiastically. “Mhmm!”

The faint smile on Steven’s lips vanished, replaced by a cold, hard line.

There wasn’t much else to discuss with Uncle Julian. He was evasive when I asked about the previous night’s events, and I figured he was too embarrassed to talk about it, so I dropped it. I was anxious to get home and deal with the matter of my mother’s heirlooms.

Steven walked me out. We were silent at first, which was typical. I was usually the one to fill the silence, chattering away while he offered his usual terse, sarcastic replies. He was never one for small talk.

Now that I was quiet, the silence was deafening.

As we were about to exit the main lobby, he grabbed my arm. I looked up into his handsome face, his low, cool voice washing over me.

“Zephyra, keep your distance from Horace. He’s bad news.”

If anyone else had said that, I might have explained that Horace had his heart set on someone else.

But this was Steven. I wanted to roll my eyes. I tried to pull my arm away, but he held fast. “You think everyone is bad news,” I said, exasperated. “Steven, I sincerely suggest you see a psychiatrist. You might have a persecution complex.”

“I’m not joking,” he said, his voice flat.

“Neither am I,” I retorted.

A dark, humorless smile twisted Steven’s lips. “I forgot. You’re in love with him. So if he’s ‘bad news’ for you, that would actually be exactly what you want, wouldn’t it?”

I clicked my tongue, tired of his obsession with Horace and not in the mood to argue.

“You said it, not me. Now stop talking bad about him. I don’t like it.”

Steven looked down at me, his deep, dark eyes turning cold, a storm brewing in their depths. I thought he was going to start a fight, but instead, he abruptly changed the subject.

“Zephyra, this is day two.”
