I calmly did my makeup and slipped into a red dress. My long, curly hair cascaded over my shoulders, and tassel earrings dangled from my ears, making me look like a seductive siren.
In my past life, seeing Verna’s innocent, angelic face had made me hate my own foxy features. I knew I could never be as pure and captivating as her, the kind of girl who was everyone’s first love, the kind who could effortlessly steal Steven’s heart. I had even considered plastic surgery, but the fear of pain had stopped me.
In this life, however, I saw my mother in my eyes, and it filled me with pride. I was happy with the face I had.
When I arrived at the Jones family home, the party was in full swing. Guests mingled, glasses clinking. I walked in and spotted Janice, radiant in a custom-made gown, her hair swept up in an elegant updo. She looked stunning, a stark contrast to my mother’s perpetually weary face.
My father stood beside her, a glass of champagne in hand, animatedly chatting with some guests. I scanned the room for Antonia but couldn’t find her. A smirk played on my lips.
She had boasted about outshining me today. Where was she?
Just then, a gentle voice called out, “Zephyra, you’re here.”
It was Janice, a warm smile on her face as she walked toward me, acting as if we were the best of friends. “Where’s Steven? Is he parking the car?”
The nearby guests looked on with anticipation.
He was the president of Aether Studio, after all. Who wouldn’t want to get on his good side?
Before I could answer, my father silenced the room. “It’s my in-law on the phone. One moment, everyone.”
The room fell silent, all eyes on him. Janice looked just as expectant.
My father, ever the showman, put the call on speaker.
I raised an eyebrow. In my past life, after much groveling on my part, Mary had attended the party, giving my father a huge boost in status and bringing in a flood of business deals.
But in this life, given how I had thoroughly pissed her off, putting her on speaker was social suicide.
