His presence was so oppressive it was terrifying, as if he’d choke the life out of me if I dared to say no.
But I met his gaze, my voice firm and deliberate.
“A divorce. You can ask me a hundred times, and the answer will still be a divorce. Don’t be so dense. The entire point of what I did was to get this divorce, so why would I ever back down—”
Before I could finish, he lunged forward, his hand clamping around the nape of my neck as he crushed his lips against mine.
The kiss was a storm of fury, a raw attempt to swallow me whole. I was pinned against the passenger seat, completely immobilized. My fingers instinctively clutched at the front of his shirt while my other hand balled into a fist, weakly pounding against his chest.
I tried to push him away, to give him a chance to cool down, but my resistance only seemed to fuel his anger. His kiss grew rougher, more demanding.
Steven was the picture of aristocratic grace—a wealthy, aloof man who existed on a plane far above the common world. People fell over themselves to please him, to flatter him, to cater to his every whim.
In two lifetimes, aside from his inexplicable fixation on Verna, I had never seen him so thoroughly provoked. Especially not after he’d lowered himself enough to ask, only to be flatly rejected by me.
His pride was wounded, and he was taking it out on my lips.
I cried out in pain, but the sounds were just muffled whimpers against his mouth. Unable to push him off, I had no choice but to bite back, hard.
He finally released me when the coppery taste of blood filled both our mouths, his ragged breaths still ghosting across my cheek.
Furious, I swung my hand to slap him, but he caught my wrist with ease, holding it in a firm grip.
“Steven, you don’t get to kiss me without my consent!” I seethed. “You’ve gone against my will time and time again. You’d better watch it, or I’ll report you for assault!”
He let out a cold laugh. “I’ve already done it. What are you going to do? Have me arrested?”
I shoved him away, biting my lip. “That depends on whether you’ll grant me a divorce.”
