Jonas looked at me, his frustration mounting. “I know it’s a lot to ask, but she’s your director and is about to become Mr. Taylor’s protégé. You know his influence in the industry. If you piss Linda off, all she has to do is say a few words to Mr. Taylor, and your career could be over. As a friend, I’m warning you now, Zephyra. You’re an adult. My face was a mask of cold indifference. A humorless laugh escaped my lips. “I’m not dropping out. If you have what it takes to humiliate me, then by all means, try.”

He stormed off, leaving me in blessed silence, my expression dark. I was about to let out a string of curses to blow off steam when York’s indignant voice erupted from my phone.

“What the hell? That is so out of line! How could the associate director do that? Sending someone to threaten you into quitting! Director, should we tell Mr. Taylor? He’ll definitely put her in her place!”

I nearly fell out of my chair. Snatching my phone, I saw the call timer at twenty minutes.

I pressed my fingers to my forehead. “York, why didn’t you hang up?”

“I wasn’t finished talking! I was about to ask what you wanted for lunch when I overheard that disgusting conversation. It’s infuriating!” York seethed. “Zephyra, you can’t be friends with someone like that. He’s clearly the type to kiss up and kick down.”

He continued, his voice earnest. “The Lancaster family is sponsoring today, and Mr. Lancaster is one of the judges. He and Mr. Taylor are close. The associate director is cozy with Mr. Taylor, but we’re on good terms with Mr. Lancaster! I heard you and him have a… well, a close relationship. Maybe you could say something to him?
