The room erupted. The revelation sent a shockwave through the crowd, and all eyes were darting around, especially toward Linda. After all, she had been the one telling everyone she had rejected Mr. Taylor’s offer years ago.
Jonas and Linda stood frozen, their minds reeling and blank. Steven’s eyes widened in stunned disbelief as he stared at me.
I didn’t see his expression. I just smiled, a confident curve on my lips.
That’s right. I was the one he wanted as his final protégé. It had always been me. From my last year of high school through my college graduation—a full five years—he had come to see me no less than five times, practically begging me. I figured a man like him was too busy to waste that kind of effort on anyone else.
Mr. Taylor was like an open floodgate, letting everything pour out. “I saw her potential right away. This girl, at such a young age, was a prodigy. Her first piece was in high school, and I knew instantly that her talent was boundless. I traveled halfway across the country to take her as my student.”
Mr. Lee immediately cut in, laughing. “And she turned you down! I told you she was too good for you. Now step aside and let me be her teacher.”
“You get lost!” Mr. Taylor retorted, scowling. “She said she wanted to finish high school first. She was just a kid, a minor who couldn’t make that decision on her own. Then she went to college and became even more incredible. Her university collection sold for millions—can you believe that? And that was just the commercial value. The artistic vision of her work was on another level, with so much room to grow. So I went chasing after her again, and she still turned me down.”
He sighed. “At the time, she had her reasons for wanting to step away from the industry. But she promised me that if she ever returned with her work, she would become my student.”
Mr. Lee’s eyes were fixed on me. “My dear, that was a promise you made when you were young. You can break it. I am sincerely inviting you to be my student, and my offer will be every bit as good as Louis’s. What do you say?”
“Zephyra has already chosen me,” Louis Taylor snapped. “So stop wasting your breath and give up!”
The audience was completely stunned into silence, watching as two titans of the industry fought over me.
Someone finally whispered, “She cheated? Used connections? At this level, the sponsor would probably have to beg her to be their designer.”
