I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 307

He trailed off, wiping his eyes before changing the subject. “We’ve been together for years. I know what kind of person she is. Her whole life is her studies, her medicine. That man must have seen how beautiful she is and tricked her, said something to manipulate her. But she won’t see me again. I don’t know what to do. My mind is a mess.”

“Zephyra, I know it’s unprofessional to bring personal problems to work, but… I have no one else to talk to, and I feel awful. Forget everything else for a second. How do I get her to at least agree to see me one more time?”

I stared at Jacob in shock. His large, dark eyes were red-rimmed, and his normally cheerful face was etched with misery. He was still just a college kid, unable to hide his emotions. I could feel his pain and desperation radiating off him.

But this didn’t make any sense. Weren’t he and Verna supposed to be unshakably in love? In my past life, they had been inseparable. Steven had been the one to forcibly break them up, and Verna had only left Jacob to protect him.

Why was she the one ending things this time? Why was her story so different now?

I couldn’t figure it out. “Are you sure she got into a luxury car with a tall, handsome man?” I asked, frowning. Was her roommate exaggerating, or was there really someone else? Tall, handsome, luxury car… every detail seemed to point to Steven. Could he have made his move on Verna already?

If so, he was a true scumbag. He had tormented me the night before last, divorced me yesterday morning, and was already hitting on another woman by the afternoon, all before calling to harass me at night.

God, if I ever saw him again, I was going to smash a bottle over his head.

Jacob shook his head, his eyes filled with despair. “That’s what her roommate said. I didn’t see it myself, but… she hasn’t been acting like herself lately. I can feel it.”

Verna’s behavior was definitely strange. Avoiding Jacob after returning to the country was a huge red flag for a supposed loving girlfriend. I remembered how, in my past life, I would report my every move to Steven, not just for his peace of mind, but because I secretly hoped he would come and pick me up. When you’re deeply in love, that dependency is powerful.

“What reason did she give for breaking up with you?” I asked.

He ran a hand through his hair in agony. “She said we’d grown apart. But that’s impossible. We were fine before she left the country. She was gone for less than a month! How could we have grown apart so quickly? It has to be a misunderstanding, but I can’t clear it up if I can’t even see her.”
