I came out of the bathroom in my robe and, not finding anyone in the room, I opened the door to see if Steven was outside. As I dried my hair, I saw Verna coming out of the room next door.
She looked aggrieved and furious, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. She turned back to speak to someone inside the room.
“Mr. Lancaster, forget about us for a moment. Even if you don’t care about me, you have to consider my parents. They sent me here to see you! The whole world knows I’m your fiancée, yet you’re tangled up with Zephyra. What does that make me? And what does that make her? The other woman?”
Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. My mind went blank, my hand frozen mid-motion.
Verna was Steven's fiancée?
Was this arranged before or after we got together?
The words “other woman,” when applied to me, filled me with an inexplicable rage.
Lost in thought, I forgot I was eavesdropping and met Verna’s gaze. Her eyes were filled with hostility, as if I had stolen something precious from her. She looked like she wanted to slap me.
I didn't move. She gritted her teeth and walked away.
A moment later, a tall, familiar figure emerged from the room next door. His expression was cold and impassive, clearly in a foul mood. But when he saw me, a flicker of panic crossed his eyes, and he froze.
“Zephyra…”
My expression returned to normal as I continued drying my hair. “What’s this about a fiancée? Are you getting married to someone else? Weren't you going to tell me?”
Steven’s face darkened with what looked like anger, and he strode toward me.
