Steven sat by my bed. His handsome, refined face showed little change, but his clenched jaw revealed he was far from relaxed.
My lashes trembled. I remembered how naive and sweet I was during my amnesia, letting him sweet-talk me into anything, and how I'd somehow ended up sleeping with him. A flicker of anger sparked in my otherwise numb heart.
“If you had acted like a decent human being and hadn't schemed, you never would have had the chance to get me to remarry you.”
Steven's pupils constricted for a second before he suddenly laughed.
“You haven't forgotten what happened when you had amnesia, have you? You were the one who clung to me. I pushed you away, I warned you, but you shamelessly insisted on sticking to me. Was I supposed to act like a gentleman?”
“The grievances between us are so tangled, it's impossible to tell who owes who more. When you throw yourself at me, why should I be the gentleman?”
He was right. I was pathetic, always the one to chase after him. I had to admit defeat.
But then, my voice turned icy.
“What about Leonard, then? Hiding his illegitimate son, forcing his ex to slander him, trapping him abroad just to control me. I could almost forgive it before, when you were determined to fight me to the death. But even after I lost my memory, you didn't stop. You kept going after my family.”
“You've lied and hurt me time and again. Now that my memory's back, it makes perfect sense for me to kick you to the curb again, don't you think?”
Steven looked at me. My long hair partially hid my striking features, but my eyes were utterly cold.
He pressed his lips together. “What if I told you I was planning to send your nephew back as soon as we remarried? Would you believe me?”
A smile appeared on my face. I closed my eyes, my expression a mixture of weary resignation and even gentleness.
“Steven, no one can hold all the cards forever. Even if this accident hadn't happened, even if we had remarried and you'd sent him back, we would have just ended up divorced again once I got my memory back. Would you have just kidnapped him again to threaten me then?”
“And it's not just Leonard. You went after Horace, too. You know he saved my life. And even if he hadn't, even if we were even, he's still my friend. You crippled him and ruined everything he had. You're so powerful, why not just cripple me too?”
“It would be more convenient, wouldn't it? Save you the trouble of tormenting Leonard. Trapping me would be enough.”
