Hearing my question, Verna remained silent.
Her lips curved into a mocking smile as she stared at me, clearly enjoying stringing me along.
I felt a surge of irritation. "Not talking? You keep calling me the villainess. I suppose it would be perfectly in character for me to break the heroine's arm, or maybe ruin her face, wouldn't it?"
I picked up the nearby fruit knife and slowly advanced on her.
I don't know if my acting was just that bad, or if Verna had simply given up. She looked completely defiant, taunting me. "I won't tell you. If you have the guts, then kill me!"
I faltered, suddenly losing interest.
Steven and I really were nothing alike. He was a natural predator, exuding danger without even trying; whereas I, no matter how hard I tried to play the part, my inherent powerlessness meant I could never be like him.
Since Verna wouldn't talk, I wasn't going to create more trouble for myself. If I didn't know, I wouldn't have to repay the debt.
I tossed the knife into the trash can and turned to Steven. "You made me a promise. It's time to deliver!"
She'd had a taste of physical pain. Now, it was time for Verna to know what it felt like to lose everything.
Steven nodded slightly and gave Gordon a look. Gordon understood immediately.
He walked up to Verna, his expression serious. "Ms. Garcia, according to our records, the one billion dollars you owe Mr. Lancaster was a loan for your company's startup capital. Please repay it immediately, or we will be forced to take legal action."
Verna's brow furrowed in disbelief. "That's nonsense! That money was a gift from Mr. Lancaster! Why should I have to pay it back?"
Seeing the panic on Verna's face was almost amusing.
She went on and on about being the heroine, acting so righteous, but in the face of money, she was just as fragile as anyone else.
Gordon was unmoved, a flicker of contempt in his eyes. "Ms. Garcia, you seem to be mistaken. We have clear documentation for all of this. Now, please fulfill your repayment obligation!"
