Gordon spoke while scanning the room. The room was less than 150 square feet and completely open, but he looked around again and again, as if he couldn't believe his eyes.
I casually picked up a glass of water and took a sip. "Stop looking. He stepped out to take a call. He should be back soon."
Gordon retracted his gaze. "I'll wait then."
I glanced up at him. Gordon stood ramrod straight, a posture more perfect than any military stance I'd managed in college. Just looking at him was exhausting.
"You can sit while you wait."
Steven might be a jerk, but Gordon was a decent guy. I could separate the two and wouldn't take my anger out on him.
Just as Gordon was about to speak, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, and his expression changed dramatically.
In my experience, Gordon was always composed, rarely showing his emotions. It was rare to see him display such blatant annoyance, and my curiosity was piqued.
Gordon hesitated for a moment before answering. "Mr. Lancaster, I already told you… Ms. Garcia?"
Verna?
I shot upright, staring intently at Gordon, straining to hear the rest of their conversation.
Gordon glanced at me before speaking into the phone, "I'm sorry, Ms. Garcia, I've made myself clear. I can't help you with this. You should ask someone else."
With that, Gordon hung up without a second thought.
"Was that Verna? Did she need something?" I asked tentatively, though I already had my suspicions.
Gordon paused for a moment, seeming to consider how to phrase his words.
"Well, it's not exactly a secret. It's just that Mr. Lancaster was worried it might upset you, so…"
It had to do with Steven. What had that bastard been hiding from me now?
Seeing my expression darken, Gordon cleared his throat and continued, "Mr. Lancaster had Verna working as a janitor at his company. Apparently, she got into a conflict with some other employees, and her hand was crushed. There's nerve damage… It's unlikely she'll ever be able to do delicate work again."
