I lounged on the living room sofa watching TV, ordering Steven to bring me nuts and dried fruit, and even had him cut up a fruit platter for me.
Watching him bustle around, I finally understood why his mother had enjoyed ordering me around so much. The feeling was incredible.
Especially when the person you were bossing around was someone who annoyed you. The pleasure was ten times better!
I munched on fruit while watching a period drama, thoroughly enjoying myself.
After a short while, Steven came out from the kitchen, apparently worried. He placed a glass of water in front of me and frowned at the half-empty fruit platter. “Fruit has a lot of sugar. You shouldn't eat so much at night.”
I ignored him completely.
In response, I speared a piece of apple with my fork and popped it into my mouth.
Steven gave a helpless smile and turned back to the kitchen.
Just as I was getting into the most exciting part of the show, Steven's phone, which he'd left on the table, started ringing.
I couldn't be bothered with it and pretended not to hear.
But the person on the other end was persistent. After three missed calls, they were still trying.
“Steven!” I finally caved and yelled toward the kitchen a few times, but only the echo of my own voice answered.
The old house had excellent soundproofing, and with the kitchen door closed, he couldn't hear a thing from in here.
The caller seemed determined to reach Steven. Even as I tried to ignore it, the phone kept vibrating stubbornly, its persistence suggesting some kind of urgency or unease.
I couldn't help but feel curious. Who would be so desperate to disturb Steven like this?
I picked up the phone and glanced at the screen. It showed an unsaved number, but for some reason, it felt familiar.
“This number…”
