I froze on the spot, staring at Steven.
"What are you talking about? You were the one eager to give me a massage. When did it become me needing you?"
Steven shot me a meaningful glance and suddenly smiled. "Didn't you tell Tess you wanted me to help you?"
His words made it all clear. So, it was all Tess's doing.
But it made sense. Tess was hired by Steven, so naturally, she wouldn't say anything to displease him.
Being able to read the room—that's what a clever person does.
When I didn't respond, Steven's expression immediately turned anxious. He walked over and took my hand. "Are... are you angry?"
I shook his hand off and glared at him. "Stay away from me."
Steven's face grew serious. "Alright, alright. I'm leaving now. Just calm down."
With that, he took the foot bath and left.
Perhaps it was because of the foot soak, but I started feeling drowsy not long after lying down.
However, I kept waking up every half hour, startled each time. I would dream of standing on a cliff edge or of a wrecked car, and I'd wake with my heart pounding in a panic that I couldn't control.
In a hazy state, I felt a sense of warmth and security, and then I drifted off to sleep.
When I opened my eyes again, the clock on the nightstand read 5:00 AM. I turned my head and was met with the close-up view of Steven's handsome face. I was resting on his arm, while his other hand was lightly placed above my waist.
I once heard that dreams reflect one's true desires. Was I trying to make up for my real-life regrets in my dreams?
But could they ever truly be made up for?
I lowered my gaze, completely unaware that the man in front of me had woken up.
Suddenly, my hand was grasped tightly. I looked up to see Steven holding my hand, his eyes crinkling into a smile. "What's this? Flirting with me while I'm asleep?"
His words made me flush with a mix of shame and annoyance. Shame because my actions had been a bit out of line, and annoyance because it was hardly flirting.
I huffed. "Don't flatter yourself. With all the young heartthrobs in the world, why would I flirt with an old relic like you? You think too highly of yourself."
The sky outside was still dark, and the only light in the room came from a small night lamp, enough to see Steven's features but not the emotion in his eyes.
