Steven's lips were tight as he breathed heavily. "Zephyra, don't force me to lock you both up. You know that when I'm pushed, I'm capable of anything."

"Zephyra, stay with me. Don't go, please?"

I froze, not saying a word.

I knew Steven well enough. He would absolutely do what he said.

There was no point in arguing with him further. I would only be the one to lose out.

Seeing my silence, Steven took it as my agreement. He took my hand, his expression softening considerably.

"Zephyra, I was wrong in the past. Believe me, I will take good care of you both from now on!"

I didn't want to discuss this with him. I subtly pulled my hand back and said flatly, "Have you found Queena?"

At my question, Steven sat down next to me, his brow furrowed. "We found her, but our plan was disrupted. Some other group who came out of nowhere is also looking for her."

Why did that sound so familiar? "When did this happen?"

Steven's face soured again, as if mentioning this was a great humiliation for him.

"This afternoon."

It really was him. Ryan had sent me a few texts later, basically calling the group that showed up a bunch of idiots.

I never thought the idiot would be Steven...

Steven didn't know what I was thinking. He took my hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, I'll catch her soon. I absolutely will not let her appear before you again!"

Tess looked at Steven. "Mr. Lancaster, a woman named Verna came looking for you today!"

Steven's gaze sharpened. "How did she get in? What did she want?"

Tess glanced at me, her voice tinged with anger. "She said she was your lover, so the bodyguards didn't dare stop her. She called Madam the other woman, said she was the real one, and told Madam to get out of the estate. She even got physical! She shoved Madam twice. If the bodyguards and I hadn't stepped in, Madam would have definitely gotten hurt."

"She also cursed Madam and the baby, saying all sorts of vicious things. Madam was shaking with anger. And at the end, Verna tried to throw water on her, but thankfully she missed."

I listened quietly as Tess twisted the truth, spouting absolute nonsense with a perfectly straight face.

Tess didn't know about Verna's relationship with Steven. When it came to Verna, Steven would always make a big show of punishing her but let her off easy. The few times he'd been harsh with her were only because I had forced his hand.
