I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 777

At my words, Steven's expression changed instantly, his face becoming an unreadable mask.

I'd been with Steven long enough to know him well, and it was obvious he was hesitating.

I just didn’t understand why my heart ached as if it had been pierced by something sharp, even though I’d already predicted this outcome.

The large living room fell into a dead silence.

I smirked. “I thought you said you’d do what I wanted. What’s the matter? Can’t bring yourself to do it?”

All that talk about being devoted to me, and he still couldn't let go of Verna.

Steven turned his head, his brow furrowed. His eyes held an unreadable emotion. Was it sadness? Reluctance? I couldn't put my finger on it, but the look felt hauntingly familiar.

It was the same expression he'd worn in my past life, right after I'd lost our child.

Steven locked his eyes on mine. “Are you serious?”

His question caught me off guard. It felt like if I said yes, he would actually go through with it.

I curved my lips into a faint smile. “What do you think?”

I really couldn't figure Steven out. One moment he acted like he didn't care about Verna, the next he was being incredibly lenient with her.

This wasn't the first time Verna had come after me. Knowing Steven’s personality, he shouldn't have let her off so easily, yet he had, time and time again.

Steven stared at me, his eyes darkening. “Fine. I’ll make her disappear.”

Fine?!

My eyes widened in shock. I had expected him to make up an excuse to placate me, not to actually agree.

Tess, sensing the tense atmosphere, hurried after me. “Let me help you up the stairs.”

I turned and went upstairs without giving Steven another look.

As we reached the landing, she whispered, “Ma’am, Mr. Lancaster was watching you the whole time. He looked so sad.”

“I think Mr. Lancaster took you seriously. He probably thought you really wanted him to make someone disappear, and that’s why he hesitated. After all, that’s illegal! Men can be so literal sometimes. My boyfriend’s the same way. Sometimes I just want to throttle him.”

Tess’s lighthearted attempt at a joke did nothing to lift my spirits.

If Steven was really worried about breaking the law, he never would have gone after Horace. The truth was, he just couldn't bring himself to harm Verna.

“You’re overthinking it,” I said, shaking my head. “Your Mr. Lancaster is just sentimental. He can’t bear to hurt her, that's all.”
