Nelson was too careful. I couldn't find any opening, so all I could do was pray for a delay on the road and cling to the faint hope that Steven or Uncle Julian would find me in time.
Suddenly, I remembered something. "Is your client's business settled?"
The man paused for a moment, then nodded.
I said nothing more. Steven had really married Queena.
The man clapped his hands together. "Alright, enough chit-chat. Let's get going. The sooner we get this done, the sooner I can have dinner."
Rachel and I exchanged a look and slowly shuffled toward the door.
Suddenly, the sound of urgent footsteps echoed from downstairs. It sounded like a lot of people, and the whole building seemed to shake.
Someone shouted from outside the door, "Nelson, we've got intruders!"
The words had barely left his mouth when a pained scream erupted outside. The door was kicked open, and Nelson reacted instantly, yanking me in front of him and pressing a gun to my head.
A tall figure strode into the room. It was Steven. He was wearing a suit, his hair and face neatened up, but even so, his exhaustion was palpable.
Steven's gaze locked onto me, his initial anxiety instantly transforming into icy rage. He stared daggers at Nelson and said in a low, dangerous voice, "Let her go."
Nelson's expression shifted, and he pressed the gun harder against my head. "I'm warning you, don't take another step, or I'll blow her head off right now."
Steven stopped in his tracks, his brows furrowed deeply, his eyes filled with worry as he looked at me.
