Amelia had definitely grown bolder-she actually dared to ask Benjamin to smile for her.

If Daniel had tried that, he’d be nursing a giant lump on his head by now.

Amelia stared up at him with those big, watery, sparkling eyes, blinking like crazy.

Benjamin’s Adam’s apple bobbed once.

Then the corner of his mouth lifted again.

Amelia saw it and instantly beamed back.

“So magical!” she said.

Her eyes crinkled with joy. With Benjamin actually playing along, she got braver by the second.

She even blurted out, “Benjamin, you look so handsome when you smile.”

Amelia was clearly getting more and more comfortable around him.

After the compliment left her mouth, she didn’t look away shyly like she used to.

Those bright eyes-just like Nina’s-stayed locked on him.

Benjamin held her gaze.

After a long second, he asked, voice low, “Do you like seeing me smile?”

One moment Amelia was grinning ear-to-ear; the next, his question froze the smile right off her face.

She stared blankly for two full seconds before firing back, “If I say yes, will you smile more often?”

Benjamin nodded. “Yes.”

That single “yes” short-circuited Amelia’s brain.

While she was still processing what he meant, a very loud, very ignored little voice suddenly bellowed from across the yard.

“Mommy! Play together!”

Nina had been entertaining herself for ages and was officially bored.

She yelled for Amelia, then immediately for Benjamin too.

That shout snapped both parents into action.

“Mommy, I so high!”

Nina had climbed the rope net and was convinced she was on top of the world.

Amelia played right along. “Wow! Nina is super high!

“Nina’s taller than Mommy now!”

Her exaggerated praise sent Nina into giggles.

After the climbing net, Nina demanded Amelia hold her on the swing.

“Daddy, push!”

Nina was great at giving out orders.

Amelia sat and held her; Benjamin pushed.

The three of them played together while Nina squealed at ear-splitting volumes.

They stayed outside almost a full hour, and Nina still didn’t want to stop.

“Mommy, more play!”

“No more, sweetie. You’ve played tons. Time to rest,” Amelia said.

The real reason Amelia wanted her inside was to put in the eye drops.

While playing, Nina kept trying to rub her eyes.

Amelia had stopped her a few times, so Nina switched to squeezing them shut really hard instead.

Benjamin noticed too.

When Nina started whining about staying outside, he simply scooped her up and headed in.

He talked about toys as he walked, trying to get her attention. “We’ll play excavators in your room. You still have unopened excavators, right?”

Nina took the bait instantly.

“Daddy… no more.”

All her excavators had been lovingly demolished. She grabbed Benjamin’s face with both hands and planted two big kisses on him.

“Daddy buy! Red one.”

She stated her demand very seriously.

When Benjamin didn’t answer right away, she puckered up and kept smooching.

She was giving it her all.

“Daddy, Nina so love you!”

Kisses plus confession-Nina was pulling out all the stops for one excavator!

Benjamin let her shower him until her patience was almost gone, then finally nodded. “Okay. I’ll buy it in a

bit.”

“Daddy, I watch.”
