Chapter 395 She Was Starving

Catherine’s estate had an excellent private doctor on staff.

Edward looked at the feverish child in his arms, then thought about Catherine, who hated tardiness more than anything.

He clenched his teeth and decided to risk it.

If I leave her here, the fever could really harm her.

I’d better take her along.

Once at the estate, I can say Drew found her.

Drew was the name of the dog with him.

Having made up his mind, Edward didn’t hesitate further.

He carried Nina and led Drew away.

Soon, Nina was brought to the estate.

The moment they arrived, the doctor took over.

Edward knew the private doctor here.

He had called ahead on the way.

Upon seeing Nina, the doctor exclaimed, “Poor little thing.”

The doctor worked efficiently to bring down Nina’s fever and treat her swollen ankle.

Meanwhile, Edward went to see Catherine.

To keep Catherine from disliking Nina too much, Edward immediately spun a pitiful backstory for Nina.

“Catherine, she’s an orphan,” Edward explained. “She’s in a terrible state. I promise, she’ll only stay here temporarily. As soon as she’s better, I’ll take her away immediately.”

Edward promised not to let the child bother Catherine.

Catherine frowned. It felt like far too many children had been coming into her life lately.

First, Elizabeth lost two children, and now Edward brought one back.

I’ve been hearing about entirely too many children recently.

As Edward kept talking about the child, Catherine cut him off. She didn’t want to hear another word on the topic.

Time passed. The “orphan” Edward spoke of, thanks to the doctor’s diligent care, slowly began to recover. Her high fever gradually subsided.

After the fever broke, she didn’t wake right away. She slept straight through into the night.

Finally, in the deep night, Nina-now dressed in clean little pajamas-opened her eyes, groggy and confused.

Nina hadn’t eaten for a full day and night. She woke up because she was starving.

When she awoke, she felt she wasn’t cold anymore.

She sat up dazedly and called out into the empty room, “Mommy? Daddy?”

Nina started calling for her parents again.

She thought maybe Amelia and Benjamin had rescued her.

But no one answered.

The bed was a little high.

Nina tried to climb down, but her chubby little body got stuck hanging over the edge.

She was afraid to jump.

She’d fallen off a bed a few times before and had learned her lesson.

Nina couldn’t jump down, and she couldn’t climb back up.

Stuck in this awkward position, Nina grew frustrated and started to cry.

“Mommy! Mommy!” she cried, her voice hoarse but still surprisingly loud.

Before long, Edward and the doctor hurried into the room.

Seeing strangers, Nina thought she’d been captured again.

This time, the grievance was too much. She couldn’t hold it in.

“Cacch Nina?” she sobbed, her optimism finally shattered.

She was genuinely heartbroken.

Seeing she was awake, Edward walked over and lifted her safely off the bed’s edge.

Edward didn’t speak Nina’s language.

But Edward knew how to hold a child.

He held Nina, trying to soothe her.

Nina wasn’t having it. She squeezed her eyes shut, tilted her head back, and kept calling for Amelia.

As she cried, “Mommy,” her stomach let out a loud grumble.

Edward heard it.

He smiled helplessly. After checking with the doctor, he carried Nina to the dining room.

Edward planned to find her something to eat.

Nina cried the whole way, dedicated to her task. She cried from the room, down the hall, and only stopped when they entered the dining room.

“Catherine?” Edward said in surprise, seeing someone seated at the table.

He hadn’t expected to find her here.

Catherine was in her pajamas. Thanks to meticulous maintenance, she looked years younger than her age.
