Chapter 429 Who Told You I Was Dead?
“No more,” Nina announced as she shoved the rest of the chocolate into her mouth all at once, puffing her cheeks out like a chipmunk.
Nelson was worried she might choke. “Nina, eat slowly,” he reminded her.
Harry, who hadn’t gotten any chocolate, looked disappointed. Now that the fight was over and apologies were made, he wanted to be friends.
“We be friends?” he asked.
Nina had friends everywhere she went. After thinking for a second, she nodded her chubby little head. Sure, she could have one more friend.
Harry got excited when Nina agreed. He immediately shared his big plan.
“We
go
fun place,” he declared proudly. “We brave kids.”
The “fun place” was an abandoned amusement park that had been shut down.
Some grown-ups said scary things were there, but hearing those rumors just made Harry and
his friends want to check it out.
They thought going inside would prove how brave they were.
Nina’s eyes
lit up with interest. She definitely wanted to go with Harry.
Harry was happy to have her join. They settled on a time-three days from now. Nina could come find him then.
The kids didn’t need Nelson to translate every word anymore. They’d gotten translation devices from the adults.
While chatting with Harry, Nina kept walking steadily in one direction.
“Nina, where you go?” Nelson asked, noticing her determined stride.
“Pwetty uncle,” she replied, her little feet not stopping.
She had just spotted Lester. Her screen time was limited by Amelia, and she loved playing outside, so her eyesight was sharp.
She was sure she’d seen Lester’s figure and was going to check.
Sure enough, after a short walk, she found him. Lester was still there, sitting on a stone bench

drinking coffee.
Nina’s eyes went wide when she got close enough to see his face clearly.
“Pwetty uncle!” she cried, toddling over and squeezing her chubby little body between his legs.
Their eyes met. Nina tilted her head, genuinely confused. “You no die?”
Lester stared at her. “What?”
Still puzzled, Nina raised a little hand and gave him an experimental pat. Lester didn’t react. She patted him again.
On the third pat, Lester finally caught her chocolate-smeared hand.
“You’re getting my clothes dirty,” he said coolly.
Nina looked down. Sure enough, her little hand had left a chocolaty print on his pants. She instinctively tried to wipe it off, only making the smear bigger.
“Stop,” Lester said, his voice flat. “Don’t wipe it.”
His voice made Nina even more confused.
“You die?” she asked.
“No,” Lester replied, his eyes narrowing. “Who told you I was dead?”
He already had a good guess.
Nina blinked her big eyes and, under his steady gaze, cheerfully ratted out her dear uncle.
“Un-coo Dan’el,” she reported, her little voice crisp. “You die. Nina cry. Nina sad.”
She even touched her own eyelids, earnestly explaining how she had cried and been sad.
Lester just looked at her. He’d played with her yesterday mostly to get under Benjamin’s skin.
As far as he was concerned, they were just passing acquaintances. She shouldn’t have any real feelings for him.
It’s strange… she was actually sad thinking I died?
