Chapter 444 Lester’s Adoptive Father

Lester went to see his adoptive father, Philip, soon after.

Philip was reclining on a comfortable chaise longue, a blanket draped over his legs. He coughed intermittently, looking quite ill.

Listening to the coughs, Lester inquired with feigned concern, “I know a very good doctor. Would you like me to recommend him to you?”

Philip’s eyes were half-closed, a finely bound Bible in his hands. “No need,” he replied slowly.

They sat in silence for a moment before Philip asked Lester about business matters. They conversed for a while.

During their talk, Lester mentioned a biotech company. When that company was brought up, Philip’s half-closed eyes snapped fully open.

Lester sneered inwardly.

Philip had so many adopted children for one simple reason: he couldn’t have any of his own. He had a congenital condition that made it impossible.

He had collected children like someone might collect dogs, seeing himself as the master controlling his pack.

He probably never imagined that Lester, the “dog” he’d been most satisfied with, would slip his leash and begin consuming him from the inside out:

Philip’s investment in the biotech and pharmaceutical company was a desperate attempt to cure his condition.

He wanted a child of his own blood. Once he had that, adopted sons like Lester would be utterly disposable.

In truth, Philip’s patience had already worn thin. He could no longer tolerate Lester.

“Stay at the estate for a couple of days,” Philip suggested. “We haven’t had a good heart-to-heart talk in a long time.”

Lester knew Philip wasn’t planning anything good. In the past, Lester could have easily made an excuse and left.

Even if he insisted on going, Philip wouldn’t have openly stopped him.

But this time, Lester agreed. He stayed for dinner with Philip.

During the meal, as if remembering something, Lester asked casually, “Before you adopted me, Father, did I have any younger siblings?”

He hadn’t let go of that hazy flash of memory that came while caring for Nina. He felt certain he had taken care of a very young child before, and a difficult one at that.

Hearing Lester ask about his biological family, Philip looked up. “What’s this? Are you looking for your relatives now?”

“Not at all,” Lester replied coolly. “I have no interest in finding them. It was just a random question.”

Their conversation was stifling, devoid of any genuine warmth, filled only with mutual wariness.

Lester barely ate a few bites during the entire meal.

After seeing Philip off to rest, Lester began strolling casually around the Powell Estate. He appeared to be taking a walk, but in reality, he was searching for Nina.

The Nina he was looking for wasn’t far away. She had climbed out of the box a long time ago.

The little girl had intended to find an adult to help her locate Lester, but something terrible happened in the estate before he arrived.

One of Philip’s girlfriends had died just because she’d displeased him. And Nina happened to see the woman’s body being carted away.

Terrified, Nina hid behind a large decorative piece and didn’t dare move a muscle.

As time passed, Nina remained hidden until night fell, and everything around her turned dark. Her stomach growled with hunger, and her eyes welled up with tears.

Now, the frightened Nina just wanted to go home. When she had playfully turned herself into a “baby package”, she never imagined it would be like this.

The packages she had seen were just left at the door. She was too little to understand how dangerous her actions were.

“Daddy,” Nina whimpered, crawling out from behind the ornament. She patted her smartwatch, but it wouldn’t light up. She couldn’t make a call anymore.

With her phone dead, Nina fumbled in the dark, trying to find a way out.

But the house had motion-sensor lights. As her chubby little feet shuffled along, lights flickered on. Immediately, Nina heard someone shout.
