Nina was rummaging through the grass, and in no time, she’d nabbed two big, wiggly worms.
So engrossed was she in her worm-catching spree that she didn’t realize she’d wandered into the back yard.
The back yard exuded a quiet, enchanting charm.
With the worms squirming in her little fists, Nina took a quick look around and then just kept plodding along.
Before long, she came across a woman sitting on the ground, her hand wrapped around a rosebush.
The woman was a real looker. Sure, there were a few lines on her face, but her eyes were still knock-out gorgeous.
Nina sized her up and felt an instant kinship.
“Blood!” Nina piped up, spotting the blood on the woman’s hand gripping the rose stem.
She toddled over on her stubby legs, all in a tizzy, and urged, “Open hand… ouchie!”
But the woman sat there like she was in a world of her own.
She just kept holding onto the rose, mumbling softly, “Mia, come see the flowers with Mommy. Mommy planted loads for you.”
Nina had no clue what she was going on about.
Seeing the woman wasn’t budging, Nina plopped the worms down and reached out her chubby hand to try to pry the woman’s fingers loose.
Despite her small stature, Nina was a little powerhouse.
After some serious tugging, she managed to get the woman’s fingers to let go one by one.
Her chubby cheeks were all flushed from the effort, but she let out a little sigh of relief and beamed.
She gently picked up the rose that had dropped to the ground, pointed at the thorns, and in a bossy little voice, said, “Thorn… no touch!”
Nina had always been a curious little thing, wanting to poke and prod at everything.
She’d gone after electrical sockets, the boiling kettle, and even the spiky cactus at home.
Amelia had to give her a few wake-up calls to break that habit. She’d hold Nina’s hand just enough to make her feel the sting without really hurting her.
After a few tears, Nina learned her lesson.
“Wrap hand,” Nina declared after her little lecture.
Just as she was about to look for something to wrap the woman’s hand, a panicked voice shrieked, “Mom!

Chapter 51 Wronged
What happened to your hand?!”
It was Mia, clattering over in her high heels.
She dropped to her knees and grabbed the woman’s hand.
“Blood… you’re bleeding,” she gasped, her eyes all watery.
Then she rounded on Nina, accusing, “Did you do this?!”
Nina’s eyes went as wide as saticers.
With a determined shake of her little head, a tiny voice piped up,
“Not Nina!”

It was evident she was insistent on clearing her name, for this time, she’d been nothing but innocent.
Yet, Mia wasn’t having any of it. She exclaimed, her tone laced with accusation, “Come on! You’re still gonna say it wasn’t you? Just take a gander at what’s in your hand! My mom got her hand pricked by a thorn, and there’s the thorny flower, right in your grasp! You’re just trying to wriggle out of it!”
Mia’s outburst drew a small crowd, those nearby curious about the commotion.
As more people gathered, her voice began to quiver with emotion.
“First, you rough up Barry, and now you’ve gone and hurt my mom!
“You’re just a little tyke. Who on earth taught you to be so mean-spirited?”
She laid the blame squarely on Nina, who, clutching the flower tightly, pouted and repeated her pleas, “Not Nina! Nina good!”
The poor thing was utterly heartbroken, having done something kind only to be wrongly accused.
She yearned to explain, but Mia had already helped Jane, who seemed to be having another spell, away.
Watching them leave, Daniel, who’d just rushed over, was seething with anger. But there was little he could do in that situation.
He said coldly, “Our Nina would never start a fight on her own! Mia’s really been picking on her today. This whole thing isn’t gonna end like this!”
With Nina nestled in his arms, Daniel decided the party was no longer a place for them.
He stormed out, his face as gloomy as a stormy sky.
Seeing Daniel Jeave, Lucas motioned for Lucien to come over.
“Hey! Didn’t I tell you to keep an eye on Nina?” he said, giving Lucien a light tap on the head.
At first, Lucien was a bit miffed. But then, when he caught sight of Nina’s tear-stained chubby cheeks, alľhis irritation melted away.
After all, she looked way more miserable than he did.
