Chapter 520 Gone Like a Shot
She hadn’t done it on purpose.
When she’d run, no one had been in front of her.
Krystal had stepped out suddenly.
Nina hadn’t seen her in time and couldn’t stop, so she’d bumped into her.
She hadn’t meant to knock Krystal over.
Nina tried to explain, but Tanner just carried her faster to the snake exhibit-there were snakes here, too.
Tanner said, “Nina, wanna hear a story about snakes?”
He was actually really good with kids.
He knew tons of science facts and all kinds of folk tales, too.
Some folk stories weren’t for little kids-but that was fine. He could make up gentle ones just for her.
He told her stories to keep her busy. Nina stared at the snakes and listened wide-eyed, completely absorbed.
They stayed at the exhibit for a long while. Finally, Nina was ready to leave.
Nina said, “Un-coo Tanner, food.”
She’d had a snack at daycare in the afternoon, but she’d run around so much. It was already past five, and she was hungry from playing all day.
Tanner saw she was hungry and carried her to a restaurant.
He planned to feed her full and then take her home.
There was a highly-rated restaurant nearby that had kids’ meals.
Tanner picked it without thinking twice.
He sat down with Nina and tried to order, but Nina wouldn’t sit still.
She wiggled nonstop and kept trying to climb down.
Tanner watched her while he ordered.
Just as he was finishing up, a voice sounded.
It was Krystal-she was at the same restaurant. “Tanner, focus on your menu. I’ll watch her for you.”
Tanner said, “Thanks.”
He said the words, but still held onto Nina with one hand-he didn’t actually leave her with Krystal.

Krystal bent down and greeted Nina, who was standing on the soft leather booth seat. “Hi, I’m Tanner’s lab partner. My name’s Krystal. What’s yours?”
Nina looked at her, not very friendly, but still answered, “Nina.”
Krystal offered a small, quiet smile. She had that sharp, smart look about her, and it was pretty when she smiled.
But Nina didn’t really like her.
Nina walked back and forth on the seat, then leaned over and draped herself on Tanner’s back.
She had no toys, so she treated Tanner like one.
Nina wrapped her chubby hands around his neck and talked to him, “Un-coo Tanner, Nina down?”
She wanted to walk around.
Tanner held her little hands and said, “No climbing down. Food will be here soon. We’ll eat first. If you’re bored, I can tell you another story.”
Nina said, “No.”
She’d already heard enough stories; she just wanted to walk around.
The restaurant was big, with a winding little water feature inside.
Rose-shaped lights floated on the water, and there were tiny fish swimming around.
Nina really wanted to go look.
Tanner was busy dealing with her and barely paid attention to Krystal, who was still standing there.
He said, “No looking. We’re eating soon.”
Tanner tried to keep Nina near the booth, but clearly, he couldn’t hold her back.
Krystal saw how badly Nina wanted to go and held out her hand. “I’ll take you to play for a bit.”
Nina looked at her again when she heard that, but then shook her head.
“No.” She refused Krystal.
She hugged Tanner’s neck tighter and begged, “Un-coo Tanner, fish?”
Tanner sighed, “Alright.”
He was worn out from her begging.
He’d wanted to sit and rest for a minute, but Nina wasn’t giving him the chance.
To keep from being choked by her, Tanner set her down.
As he stood up to take Nina to see the fish, he said to Krystal, “I’ve got her. Are you eating here? If so, don’t
